Stella was glad to be leaving but she hated the way these beasts were looking at her, what they automatically expected of her. She rose to go but before Zahn could lead her away from their hearing she stopped him. "I don't live that far away. I really think I could make it there on my own. Why don't you stay here with your friends? I'll see you another time."
Kara stood stunned for a moment after the collision. Then she looked up to see who had bumped into her and ordered her so rudely out of the way. She was about to reply sharply which probably would have earned her a slap at the very least until she recognized him. "You were at the feast tonight with the queen and her guests. You're one of the General's men." She stated the obvious and then she began the interrogation, "Did you expect that halfbreed to come in? What about that wicked stoat? Did you know that Ms. Larka's gone missing and his door is locked? Is it true that the General is going to give his men a reward? Has he given you yours yet?"

It wasn't an unreasonable demand from the vixen, he was more than happy to allow her to carry on by herself now. Zahn stood and put on a gallant smile as he bowed slightly to the vixen, "Of course. I look forward to meeting you again, Miss Ambersight. I bid you a respectful good night." The fox thought acting like a gentlebeast would impress Stella much more than anything else he could have done, he knew he would see her again, for they were both serving in the palace. It would only be a matter of time until he saw her there, possibly even tomorrow.
Alexander was a bit surprised at the blatant way this Pine Marten started interrogating him, and he nearly took a step away from her. But he managed to keep his face and voice stern as he responded to those questions. "Listen, kid. I don't have time to answer your bloody questions. How did you find out about all that went on at the feast anyway? Never mind, it doesn't concern you." Alex thought one of the other servants told her all about what went on during the feast, which irritated him. Those servants should be something useful and not gossiping about stuff that didn't concern them. The major suddenly realized something after hearing those questions, Drask did promise him a reward, and this was the first Pine Marten he had met here at Sampetra. If she ended up as his reward, he didn't care if she was younger than him, he would be lucky to wind up with a Pine Marten, for their species was rare.

Stella stood there and blinked at him for a moment. That was what she had wanted, wasn't it? Yet now that he had so abruptly said good night she was disappointed somehow. He could have at least tried to see her to her door. Mentally shaking herself Stella smiled, "Yes well thank you for seeing safely thus far and I'll see you again. You know where I'll be." She turned and looked at the two ferrets. "It was nice meeting you . . . good night." She nodded once more at Zahn and then walked towards the door.
Kara rolled her eyes. She didn't like having to explain to creatures about her age. "Beg pardon, Sir, but I believe it concerns me very much if your reward is what I heard it was 'sposed to be. I'm the only pine marten what works at the palace and I'm not a kid." She stood up a bit taller. "I'm twenty. I just . . ." she shrugged, "look younger."

Zahn felt like something was missing from his farewell to the vixen, even if he made it as polite and gallant as possible. He looked over to Stella as she was walking away, wondering if there was something else he could add, but the fox found nothing. The corporal turned away from the retreating vixen and addressed the ferret captain, "Captain, I ought to get going too. The general will probably have me busy tomorrow, I'll need to head back to the barracks and get some sleep."
"Then I'll see you tomorrow, Zahn. Don't work too hard." Rigby was sure that vixen had done something to effect Zahn's once warm attitude, but it didn't concern him, he wasn't going to worry about it. The captain shot his former student a smile as the fox saluted him and turned around, marching proudly out of the tavern in the usual military fashion.
Vera didn't trust the motives of that short corporal fox, he might just have left to trail that vixen, but if he was half the beast Drask told her he was, Zahn was more than likely heading to the barracks. She wouldn't put it past him to follow Stella, though. Pushing thoughts of those two foxes from her mind, Vera focused her attention on Rigby now, it was back to work. "So, Captain, Have you been enlisted long?"
"Did General Drask tell you anything?" Alexander wasn't concerned much about an age difference if this really was the doing of Drask, it would be great to get such a reward, regardless if she was "twenty." He had trouble believing that, but he didn't let on to his suspicions. "Your a kid if I call you one. Even if you're twenty." The Pine Marten was slightly impressed that she wouldn't be bullied like most of the servants and slaves around here, she might have a little backbone under that youngish looking exterior. Or maybe she just had a problem with authority.
Zahn left the tavern in a rush, starting to head toward the barracks, but he changed his mind, he was going to catch up to Stella. He changed direction and as he walked passed the tavern again, he made sure he wasn't near any windows, he didn't want Rigby seeing him chasing after this vixen. Zahn caught sight of her a little way ahead, trudging along rather dejected looking, and the corporal increased his pace until he caught up with her. "Did you miss me, Stella? I just thought I ought to make sure you got home safe, with that big monitor out here somewhere." He knew he sounded terribly lame in his words, but it was the best he had for following her through the street.

Cander finally got done with his first drink, though he was starting to wonder if he should really spend the rest of his life wasting away. Maybe he could find new hope and family in another military. Serving under a new ruler. Maybe. If not, at lest he has enough profit to pass himself off as a rich beast. He should really be making the most of what he has left. If he does now. Where will he be in old age? Certainly not in a very good place if he kept drinking like this and spending his coins away like this!
The Pine Marten sat up and walked out of the tavern. Looking around as he walked through the lines of taverns, houses and such. Crawling with pirates, patrols, thieves, workers, pick pockets, poor beasts and sprinkles of his own beasts. He wonder though if maybe the other beasts from the same army as he was in will come here too. Sampetra being famous almost everywhere for being a hotspot for the sea beasts who had a pretty gold coin on them...

Stella jumped slightly as the fox came up behind her but she couldn't help but smile when he spoke. She laughed, "It really wasn't necessary but . . . I'm glad you did, even though I'm just going right up here." She pointed at the little building just up the road.
Kara smirked. She was actually just a little too naive to be bullied. "I've never spoken to the General in my life. Does that make a difference?"

Zahn took her arm in his and he smiled, "Well, I'll just escort you there, Ma'am. Then I can be on my way back to the barracks." Though the fox would have preferred to spend a bit more time getting to now Stella, he still thought he needed to get back to the barracks, his comrades would know he was missing. Zahn did think it was his duty to be sure Miss Ambersight made it back to her home in one piece, Drask had taught him that much.
Alexander frowned again, "Yes it makes a difference. If Drask didn't tell you anything, then you just need to mind your business and stay out of the way, until Drask says something. Then we'll talk, kid." The major wasn't very concerned about stepping on her toes now, but he would wait to see what this beast would say. For Alex wouldn't say no if she insisted on it. The Pine Marten looked over the other beast intently for the first time; she may have been younger, but she sure wasn't bad looking.

Stella smiled and walked on silently. It did make her feel safer to have him at her side again. Not to mention just the pleasure of his company. It was new and exciting to think that she had found a male friend who thought of her as more than a good time for hire. She was actually proud to come to her son tonight.
She looked up to the second floor window of the miller's home and saw that a candle was still burning there. There seemed to be a flurry of activity around it's light and then after a few seconds the front door of the building flew open and a small fox kit half ran half stumbled out into the street towards her.
"Mumma!" the child called happily before the miller's wife could catch him and pull him back. He wrapped his little arms around Stella's legs.
Stella was a little embarrassed at the sudden appearance but she couldn't help but smile. She looked at the fox next to her and explained, "Zahn, this is my son Troy."
The little martenmaid would not be put down that easily she continued to tease the Major, "Well it's good to hear that the General's beasts are so loyal to him even to the point of letting him dictate whom they shall spend their free time with."

Zahn stood for a moment without speaking, but he didn't remain fazed for long, and the corporal smiled back at Stella. His eyes traveled to the little kit, Troy. He would have never thought Stella would have a child, but like all the others, his assumptions about her were wrong. "Well, nice to meet you son, Stella. I think you'll be safe now, so I suppose I should get going back to the barracks." As much as he hated to say it, he thought it would be better to leave Stella now, she was safe at home, he had no reason to stay longer. At least that what he kept telling himself, but he had trouble believing it. He would have rather continued with her for a bit longer, but the present situation probably demanded him to leave now.
Alexander looked down at this impudent martenmaid, his expression softening slightly as he fought the urge to smile. "If I had some free time. Are you saying you want to spent your free time with me?" The major had changed his mind of getting some of that wine, now his focus was on this beast who so easily insulted him, a major in one of the most feared military forces in all of the islands, and Mossflower country. Alex planned on spending his free time tonight with this martenmaid now, if she allowed it. He would always act like a gentlebeast, so if she was just joking around with him, he would allow her to go her separate way. But she acted as if she would rather spend some time with him.

Stella happily lifted the kit who laid his head on her shoulder sleepily. She smiled at Zahn, glad he didn't seem to think any less of her for this new development.
The miller's wife however was standing in the doorway with her arms folded over her chest. She was completely aware of Stella's former occupation and had heard the promise of the vixen that she would not be bringing males home anymore now that she had secured her new job at the palace.
Stella nodded at the rat wife solemnly and as if to prove to her that she was keeping her promise she took a step away from Zahn and put out her paw to shake his chastely. "Thank you, Sir for seeing me safely home."
Kara grinned as if attempting to elicit the same expression from the major. "Well it's not everyday you meet another pine martin on the island. We should probably," she shrugged. "stick together." She actually had several motives for furthering her association with Alexander. One of course being her own enjoyment but there was also the fact that her mother would be thrilled to hear the information that she could discover from somebeast in such a high position.

"You're very welcome. I'll try to see you again tomorrow, perhaps around lunch time, if I manage to get away from the other soldiers. I bid you farewell, Miss Ambersight." Instead of shaking her paw, he lowered himself slightly and kissed the back of it, then with another smile the corporal turned away from Stella, starting his walk back to the barracks. He looked forward to seeing her again, which was inevitable, but hopefully, his gesture wasn't to forward of him. Zahn didn't look back to see her response afterward, but he could almost imagine the look on her face.
Alex refused to smile back, forcing himself to keep a straight face, "Stick together, eh? Maybe you're not just a stupid kid after all." The major found a smile creep onto his face, even when he tried hard to resist it, this day just kept getting better and better. Alex looked back at the slaves looking on to the sight of the two Pine Martens, and his brief smile disappeared, "Haul your useless carcasses to do something useful right now, and stop staring over here, mind your own business."
The words of the major may have been harsh, but after issuing them, he looked back down at the martenmaid, resuming with a slight smile. "Why don't we leave here? Any where in particular you wish to go?" It didn't matter to him where they went to spend their free time, anywhere but here.

Stella watched Zahn go with a beatific smile on her face. She kissed Troy's ear and whispered to him, "Now there goes a real gentlebeast. You could learn a lot by watching that one. I hope we get the chance to know him better." The kit had already fallen asleep before Zahn rounded the corner and gone out of site. Stella stayed there a moment longer looking where he had disappeared then she turned towards the house.
"What was that all about?" the ratwife asked as Stella passed her on the way into the house.
"One of General Drask's beasts, he wanted to make sure I got home from the palace safely." Stella answered her softly so as not to wake the kit. "Oh and the queen liked my soup."
Kara couldn't deny her pleasure at now being the news rather than just carrying it. She smiled smugly at her fellow workers. It didn't matter what she did from this point on in the evening. They would be making up all kinds of stories about her. "It doesn't matter to me. What were you planning on doing before we met? I can just tag along." The insignia on his uniform caught her eye and she reached out with one claw to touch each of the two emeralds. Then she looked back up at him and smiled.

Alexander did not really care when this beast touched the two emeralds that signified his rank, she might be the kind of creature who would try to steal them. Even so, the major smiled back at her, "I came down here to get some wine. But we should go to one of the taverns to get some. If you're old enough to drink it without passing out from one chalice." The Pine Marten wasn't too concerned about being older than this beast, it was a streak of luck to find her here in the first place, plus she was every bit as eager to waste her free time with him as he wanted to do with her.

Kara smirked. Oh yes, Mother would be proud of her for landing somebeast as highly ranked as this. "I'm old enough to know better and young enough not to care. Is that a challenge, Major?"
It was the first time she had used the title, demonstrating that she knew what the insignia meant, but it was voiced with teasing irreverence.

"Indeed it is a challenge. I don't think a young beast like you could take more than one chalice. But we'll find out." Alexander replied to her in an equally teasing manner, he was going to enjoy tonight, that was for sure. If this Pine Marten thought they should stick together, then they might start tonight, and hopefully, much longer. The major pointed to the door of the kitchen, he wanted to spend no more time here, under the eyes of those slaves and the rest, it was time to get to the tavern. "If you'll take up that challenge, then we should go on and get to the good tavern."
