Vrelt couldn't stop himself from smiling when Tallula spoke in his language, it was her first step into her new life at Riftgard. "Excellent. I have business to attend to now, I will leave the three of you here." The warlord gave orders to each of the two ferretmaids as he stepped back, "Romsca, don't be harsh with either of them. Jayne," Vrelt's voice softened ever so slightly when he looked over to the other ferretmaid, which would be pretty easy for the other beasts to catch. "Just pay attention to Romsca. I'll try to explain everything to you in detail later in the day." The ferret pulled the door open, with one last statement for them, "I'll you three at noon, in the dining hall."
Romsca was impressed with Tallula, even though the mink didn't pronounce her name right, it was a start. With Vrelt quickly moving for the door, she knew the training of his daughter rested primarily with her, though Jayne would be a help in that respect. She nodded in response to the orders the warlord issued as he pulled the door open, "Of course. Tallula seems like a beast that could handle harshness. Not so sure Jayne could, though." Romsca was planning on not only teaching the warlord's daughter, but also the other ferretmaid; it bothered her to see Jayne acting like a mere servant, so it was up to her to teach the quiet beast how to act around here. She took that duty upon herself for no other reason but to show not all female beasts were weak, Jayne would have to toughen up, for having Vrelt's protection alone would never be enough to keep her alive at Riftgard.

Jayne glanced up quickly at the Commander's words, but rather than being hurt by them she vowed to show the other ferretmaid that she could indeed take what ever was dished out to her. Then thinking quickly she knelt down to Tallula again and whispered in her ear, "Hurry before your daddy leaves tell him good bye say, 'Goodbye, Daddy'."
((sorry so short i just wanted to throw that in there))

Tallula made a sad face when she heard what Jayne said. Daddy can't stay with me? she replied back at the ferretmaid as she looked at Vrelt. First separated from mommy, now it's with daddy. Though the difference was that fact she only knew daddy for one day and maybe 6 or 8 hours. She didn't want him to leave her behind. Even though he was only going to be gone from this room and not going to be gone forever. Though knowing he was 'chief' and had many things to do. She wished she could have as much time with him as possible.

"Oh don't worry little one. He won't be away for long. He says that we're to meet him for lunch and just think of all the things you'll be able to say to him then." Jayne could understand the child not wanting to see her father go. She had had a number of beasts leave her in her lifetime as well.

Vrelt was not eager to leave his daughter's presence, either. He would have liked nothing better but to stay and aid the two ferretmaids in teaching her how to speak their language. His duty as Ruler of Riftgard forced him to do otherwise, for there was much he needed to accomplish today, starting with putting his beasts through drills; it was time he focused on strengthening his army, instead of his navy. Drask could easily best him in a war at this point, due to the size and skill of his army, though Vrelt was clearly stronger at sea. But with a strong army, he would have a better chance of defending his island from any attacks, for Drask did say he would return to take what was rightfully his.
The warlord paused briefly in the doorway, his eyes locked on Jayne's, and some of that tenderness showed there before he turned and closed the door behind him, heading off to begin that training. It wasn't something he looked forward to, but it was necessary, until noon came.
Romsca was not sure how to proceed now, but it was clear Jayne wouldn't take charge in teaching Vrelt's daughter, so it was apparently up to her to start. She tapped her paw against her desk to draw the other two beasts' attention, "So, now the teaching shall begin. I wonder how you would like to go about it, Jayne. Any brilliant ideas?" The ferretmaid decided to test out Jayne a little, just to see what she was made of, if she was intelligent at all. Romsca guessed Tallula wasn't stupid, it should be easy to teach her, maybe the mink would be able to say a few phrases in their language by noon.

Jayne bit her lip and thought a moment then she brightened, looked the commander in the eye and spoke, "When I was taught we started with a vocabulary of basic items, just pointing to them and saying their names, but we neither of us knew the other's language. I think we could add to that with some simple phrases since I can tell her exactly what they mean." She thought for another moment as if planning out the whole scope of the curriculum she would use. "There are also a few sounds in our spoken language that they don't use in theirs. It will take extra time for her to learn how to pronounce those."

Romsca nodded approvingly at the other ferretmaid, she might do alright in helping to teach Darkfang's daughter. The commander wasn't particularly impressed, though, even if Jayne had made a bit of progress in the right direction. She turned her green gaze back on Tallula, evaluating the half-breed again, if she wanted to be able to say anything to her father, she would have to cooperate with the two ferretmaids. Romsca remained silent for another moment, before speaking again to Jayne, "What are we waiting for, then? If she is going to learn something to tell Vrelt at lunch, we should get to work." The commander would again allow Jayne to make the first move, just to see what she was made of, to see how she would react to some responsibility thrust upon her.

Jayne was hesitant at first. "Indeed," she nodded slowly to Romsca then thinking of where to start she looked at Tallula and smiled. "Are you ready to begin your lessons? I think that the easiest and most fun way for you to learn will be for you to tell us what words you want to know. You can point to something and ask me what it's called or you can ask me how to say a phrase and I'll help you. Let's start with, ummmm . . ." She looked around the room for an object and her eyes alighted on the largest piece of furniture. "aha desk. Can you say the word 'desk'?"
Jayne could tell that the other ferretmaid was watching her closely but she tried to ignore her and go on as if she and Tallula were alone.

Of the two ferrets. Tallula liked Jayne better. Romsca looked more cold and uncaring than Jayne. In fact. She didn't even appear like the type that would truthfully make a good teacher. She liked Jayne because she was kinder and more caring. She would make a better teacher than the other one. Who look as stated before, uncaring, cold and looks like she has a great big ol' stick up her butt about her and Jayne! ( xD )
She smiled back at Jayne and replied in her native language. Being thankful Romsca didn't know even one word of it. That sounds like a good idea! I'll give it a try. She tried saying the word desk. "di....de....de-ask...." She growled slightly, she hoped the words don't get any longer than four letters. "Di-sk...de-sk... " Again snagging it by pronunciation instead of the simple thing normally said. Though it's a start.
(I think a 6-7 year old learns faster than younger children. I'm not sure though..... Cara? )

((actually the perfect window for language acquisition is 2-4 and that's for primary language or 2nd, 3rd, etc. but it would definitely be easier for a 6-7 year old than it would be for an adult.))
"That's wonderful!" Jayne encouraged and she gave the little mink a hug. "What shall we learn next? Chair? We say, 'chair'." She was getting excited. They were going to actually be able to do this.
She remembered her own language lessons: Crailius waited until all but one of their guards had gone up to their sleeping quarters. He rubbed her raw wrists where the manacles had dug against against the fur and flesh all day. And while he worked to bring the feeling back into her work sore paws, he spoke to her softly. She couldn't understand a word at first, but she'd loved the sound of his voice. Gradually that warm, deep voice began to make more sense to her. She remembered the first time that she'd managed to say a complete sentence in his language and he'd unthinkingly rewarded her with a kiss. It had surprised both of them but after that moment the two of them had spent every unguarded moment planning together in their broken conversation how they would escape and live together once they were free. . .
