((I apologize for what went on with the first Hunted story, I decided to start over, with a new twist to it. We can still continue the first story, too, but this is the new version. It's loosely based off the movie and book, I Am Legend, which starred Will Smith. I recommend that everyone see the movie and read the book. This is the Redwall version, with Drask instead of Will, and it take place just as the virus is spreading everywhere. And it starts out, of course, at the greatest place on the planet Earth; Seattle, Washington. This will be very different from the first version, so bear with me, people. Cara, Kal, you guys can join in with Penny and whatever character you were going to bring in, Kal. This story will go more along the lines of the movie, instead of the book though, so be sure to watch it. Will Smith is awesome in it. So I'll go ahead and start this story....))
It was the same as every other day during the early spring in Seattle, with rain pouring down. Though the weather seemed normal, everything else was going crazy, beasts were fleeing the city, trying to escape the epidemic that quickly spread throughout the Emerald City. Traffic was at a stand still, with few actually making it outside the city, before I-5 was closed off by the military, prohibiting further travel south, but that alone could not stop the spread of the virus. It was a mutated strain of the Measles Virus, something that should have never been tampered with.
The virus was created by an ambitious scientist, who hoped to develop a cure for cancer. She used a strain of the Measles virus to destroy cancer cells, and at first, her "miracle cure" worked perfectly, with everybeast who took it being freed from cancer. The cure was highly acclaimed by the rest of the world, and it began to be distributed around the planet, which would spread the deadly virus. A few months after the first tests were completed, the subjects who were cured from cancer started to slip into unconsciousness, and die. But 30% of the beasts, the ones that did not die, started to display characteristics similar to Rabies. An increased heart rate, loss of fur, sensitivity to light from the sun, and a zombie like desire for flesh. New York City was the first place to declare an emergency, with the now airborne virus spreading throughout the city like a wildfire. Most beasts who were infected died with a period of four days, but the rest became "Darkseekers." Creatures who hid out during the night, but then came out from hiding, to hunt down whatever beasts didn't get the virus. Seattle was one of the cities just now beginning to experience the dreaded virus, but there was one safe haven from the disease; Fort Lewis, a heavily fortified military base, with one of the most skilled infantry divisions in the US stationed there. ((If you guys didn't now this, I used to live in Fort Lewis when my dad was in the army, until he retired and we moved to NC. It's located just outside of Tacoma, and like 30 minutes from Seattle, if I remember correctly.))
Fort Lewis closed its gates once the Virus was reported in Seattle, and the security of the gates were increased, as well as constant patrols along the fortified electric fences, that had guard towers and barbed wire along it. It was a safe haven from the virus, a place where no cases were reported. Drask Darkfang was one of the many scientists recruited by the military after the spread of the virus, he was the head of research at the base, taking responsibility for halting the spread of the deadly virus. His official rank was Colonel, and he had full access to every part of Fort Lewis, helping to aid in securing the base. But Drask was terrified by the rapid spread of this virus, it would only be a matter of time before beasts in the base started getting it. He ordered everybeast living on the base to stock up on whatever antibiotics they could get there paws on, so they could attempt to fight the virus if it spread. That wouldn't stop it though, for the virus would kill everybeast, unless they developed an immunity to it. It was apparent that the soldiers had an immunity already, and that gave Drask hope, the virus couldn't be stopped, but a beast's body could make its own protection against it. Most weren't that lucky, however.
Drask was going back and forth between his house on the base, and the red Jeep Grand Cherokee in the carport, packing up some of his belongings. He was going to drive cross country to Seattle, in hopes of finding his best friends before the virus caught up with them. It was early morning, and rain fell at the base just as it did in Seattle, where his friends lived. He already made sure his uncle and mother were safe at Fort Lewis, but Penny wasn't, neither was Vern. Drask made sure he had his heavily modified M-16 assault rifle, he hoped that he could get into the city before nightfall. He climbed into the Jeep and started the engine, pulling it out of the carport and starting down the street, toward the nearest exit out of the base. Once he arrived, he displayed his military ID and was given clearance outside of the base, he started the short drive toward Seattle. But what should have been thirty minutes, might be several hours, because he had to travel on back roads to get there. Drask hoped that Penny and Vern were alright, and not infected by the virus. He planned on dragging the two away from the Emerald City, and back to the safety of Fort Lewis. He hoped he wasn't too late......
((So hence begins The Hunted. I hope you guys like it.))
I-5 was impossible to drive on, for it was full of stopped cars, and thousands of beasts walking, attempting to get away from the spreading virus, out of the city. Drask knew it was hopeless to attempt leaving now, the city should have been evacuated as soon as the virus started it's spread through the world, but nobeast of rank listened to the pleadings of the various military scientists. He had been granted one meeting with the mayor of Seattle, who staunchly believed the city was safe from the virus. Drask offered his hypothesis of the spread of the virus, and of course, the mayor would have none of it, claiming Drask and the rest were trying to enlarge a minor problem that was never going to affect the Emerald City. How wrong that beast was. After the spread started, he ordered an evacuation of the city, but it was far to late. Fort Lewis was the first place in the Pacific Northwest to prepare for an outbreak of the virus, under the cautious command of General Benjamin O'Neil. Because of the General's quick actions, and heeding the information the scientists provided, he made Fort Lewis an even stronger base, a safe haven for the soldiers stationed there, and their families.
Drask was full of anger that most beasts fleeing the city wouldn't make it, most would never survive the night. The base could take no more beasts within, plus, allowing more in would spread the virus into the safe zone which was Fort Lewis. It was a sacrifice that General O'Neil was forced to make, to insure the survival of the beasts inside the base, but it pained him and the others in charge to no end that they would be among the few survivors in the Northwest, while countless thousands would perish, either from the virus, or from the creatures that were infected with it. Drask put the jeep into four-wheel drive, as he left the paved street and drove into the pine forest, attempting to shave off precious minutes from his trip to Seattle. He tried to turn his thoughts away from what was happening now, and he turned on his radio, and inserted a CD. After just a moment, the song, Speed Of Sound, by Coldplay, came on, the ferret turned up the volume to drown his thoughts away, but it still racked his mind. Nothing could stop the halt of the virus. He hoped Penny wasn't among the beasts who foolishly fled the city, but he guessed she would have listened, for a day before the phone lines went down, he warned her to stay in her apartment. Drask said he would be there soon, that he would get her and Vernon out of Seattle, if they just listened to his warning. He drove on, his thoughts focused on his two friends, who's lives could very well be rested squarely on his shoulders. Coldplay always had a calming affect on him, the CD was perhaps his most treasured possession in this time of death and suffering. It was nearly impossible for him to get to sleep without listening to Coldplay before getting to bed.
Drask entered the Emerald City one hour later, around noon. It looked like a war zone, with most of the windows broke out of various businesses, caused by the Darkseekers and beasts that stole all possible supplies. The roads were clear of traffic for the most part, save for a few cars abandoned in the street, so the Jeep made quick progress through the once bustling city. Drask turned down his music as he neared the apartment complex where both Vern and Penny called their home, he hoped they were safe there, because it had been three days since he promised Penny he would be at her home. A lot could happen in three days. It had been only a week since the virus was first reported in Seattle, and already it was clear that it wreaked havoc on the city. Most beasts who survived the first wave would only become food for the Darkseekers. Unless you were a beast that was within the relative safety of Fort Lewis. Right now, Drask was dead set on getting Penny and Vernon to that secure place. If they were still inside the apartments, it would be likely that they heard his Jeep pulling in....
