Age: 24
Species: river otter
Gender: Female
Appearance:
Laney is very thin. She was anorexic in her teen seasons and has lately fallen back into the habit of not eating. She has dull brown fur that suffers from her lack of nutrition, but her eyes are bright, usually with tears. They are brown with green and gold flecks and are unmistakably her best feature. She has three green dots painted across her muzzle and wears a green dress with a beautiful silver belt. If she took care of herself she could be beautiful.Belongings:
The belt is Laney's most precious possession. Across the front it is a mesh of tiny silver rings like the most delicate chain mail and in the back it has several notches so it can be made tighter or looser. Laney also has a sling that she is adequate in using but by no means an expert.Job or Position:
faithful wife and daughter-in-lawPersonality:
Laney is a very melancholy beast. She has dealt with severe bouts of depression since she was a dibbun. This expresses itself in her anorexia. The only time she was ever truly happy was when she was with her husband Catori. With him she had hope of the future and family they would share. He could make her smile and laugh like no other creature and when she laughed it sounded like bells.History and Background Information:
Food was always an issue in Laney's family, growing up. Her parents had been oarslaves who were starved. When they finally got away they formed a holt with two other former slave couples in a land of plenty. Food became a status symbol and the founders of the holt reveled in becoming enormously fat. They also encouraged their children to eat like hares after a ten season famine. But Laney was a picky eater at the best of times and became disgusted by the absolute gluttony of the others. She started eating less and less and then skipping meals altogether. Far from seeing that she was wasting away her family took the opinion of, 'oh well more for us.'Any other details:
One day when Laney was 17 she went out for a walk during a mealtime so she wouldn't have to be around the feeding frenzy. It was a hot day and she didn't get far when she collapsed. She probably would have died right there if she had not been found by a young male otter named Catori. He thought she must be a slave who was starved by her masters and left to die when she was no longer useful. It broke his heart to find out she had done this to herself. He brought her back to the home of his parents, to whom he had recently been reunited after seasons of being an oarslave himself.
Catori was determined to help her and as he gently lead her back to health the two fell in love. When she was well enough to stand on her own, they married and they wanted nothing more than to start a family right away. However, a healer told them that she was still far to thin to safely carry a child to term. So they worked hard to get her to gain the weight she needed to gain and boost her nutrition. This was when he gave her the belt. At first, when she put it on, it was set at the tightest notch, but in the next two years she gained enough that it was snug at the fifth. They went back to the healer and were told that they could finally start trying for a baby.
Soon after this however, Catori was once again captured by vermin. Laney morned for him as if he were dead. and fell back into the habit of skipping meals here and there even as she tried to care for her now aging in-laws. It has now been over four seasons since she has seen Catori, her belt hangs loose at the third notch and she has nearly lost hope of ever seeing him again.
Laney is a great swimmer, very sleek and graceful. She is almost more comfortable in the weightlessness of water than she is on land.
