The night was quiet over Redwall Abbey, a place of peace and kindness to all who did not wish to inflict harm on its residents. That night, watchguards patrolled the walltops randomly on a specific request of one particular squirrel, who now stood over the west gate of the very Abbey he sought to defend. A fire burned in front of him, so as to not give his silouette to watching enimies. It was on his order that the guards be unpredictable in their routes tonight, for the warrior had a feeling,a gut instinct that told him something was about to happen. He didn't know what exactly, just that something would happen.
And so he stood, back straight, tail buffeted in the soft yet cold breeze, clothed in his usual hooded cloak, green tunic and green pants, blue eyes lit up by the firelight. Before headingto the walltops, he adressed Tamar, telling her that he would be exactly where he stood should she need him. Since the incident before lunch, he has been cautious with the Abbey's security, trying and failing to talk to the Marlfox in the cellars. He remembered the fox's words in detail, sending another chill down his spine.
Ye damned squirrel! You spineless worm! You broom-tailed bastard! Redwall will crumble and fall all the way down to Hellgates!
He sighed, a puff of steam appearing in front of his face, which showed his discomfort at the rememberance. However, he also felt a slight calm setlle over him as he placed himself in the relative peace of the walltops. He moves over to the ramparts and leans on his elbows, once again gazing up at the stars, as if for guidance.

Tamar tossed and turned in her little dormitory bed. The bedsprings creaked loudly and she looked over to the other side of the room to see if she had disturbed Saol. The mole abbess seemed to still be snoring. Tamar sighed. How could she possibly sleep at a time like this? Tamar got up and went to the room's one window. She looked out at the abbey's main defense, the high outer wall. She saw a couple of the sentries pass each other and possibly share a short greeting. She couldn't see the west gate from this window but she knew that's where Silas stood. She considered going to him but she didn't want to disturb him. He was so on edge when she had last spoken to him, like he was sure something would happen tonight. She could feel the same dull worry as well. Even though she knew the Marlfox was locked down in the cellars, it was almost as if he was still prowling just outside the gate. Somebeast was, she was sure of that. She couldn't just lay here in bed and do nothing. She had proved her aim as a bow beast. They might need her on the wall. Quickly and quietly she changed into her habit and tied a warm wool shawl around her shoulders. Lastly before she left the room she grabbed her grandfather's shortbow. Then she headed down to grounds being careful to let the rest of the abbey sleep.

Garret stood, completely still, where he'd asked Tamar to meet him. Evidently, she's not coming, or doesn't wish to speak now, how unexpected, he thought, and sighed. Well, I have lookout duty to do anyway, Garret thought, his keen Canid eyes allowing him to see better then most.

The warrior squirrel looked to the heavens, the light of the stars reflected in his blue eyes. He saw what appeared to be a sword when he connected certain stars. He also noticed a large, rounded object with the sword, but didn't bother to observe it. He instead looked across the vast plain, searching for any signs of the enemy, as if he were a hawk.
Seeing nothing indicating the presence of vermin, or any living thing out there, he sighed and looked up again, thinking about his travelling days, when he would wander through the back woods, always on edge. He reflected it wasn't too much different from now, except he was trying to protect an Abbey and its occupants from the scourge of evil. He was particularly worried about one individual in their midst, though they were an excellent shot with bow and arrows. It's not to say that he wouldn't protect any otherbeast. He would defend anybeast within the Abbey with his life if necessary. It was just that he had this fear that something might happen.
He shook his head. Just concentrate on watching... He thought, looking back to the flatlands, abandoning his fear to do his duty. However, the night was cold, making his claws, footpaws, and tail a little numb. he moved towards the fire to try and warm up, facing the Abbey building now. He saw the main door open, and quickly picked up his bow, which lay nearby. However, when he saw it was not the escaping Marlfox, he relaxed, still holding his bow. As the beast drew closer, he identified a bushy tail, then the familiar form of Tamar.

As Garret's eyes roved over the walls themselves, he noticed Silas picking up a bow, and looked to see what the Warrior Squirrel was staring at. Oh, maybe she is coming after-, no, she's not out here to talk to me. Look back to your duties, Strife.

The night was cold and Tamar went to put her paws in her pockets to get them out of the wind. When she did she felt something peculiar. She pulled out a scrap of parchment. She didn't remember putting anything into this pocket. She stepped into the light streaming out of one of the great hall windows to read what was written there:
Don't tell Silas about this, I'll never hear the end of it. I need to clear up a few things with you, before you fire more arrows at me. Ignore this if you wish. Midnight tonight, corner of the East and South walls. P.S. Nice shot. At me. If you ever do it again I'll snap every bow and arrow here in half, but nice shot.
Garret Strife
Her first thought was to crumple it up and forget she had ever recieved it but the more she thought about it the more she wanted to give that fox a piece of her mind. She looked over at the place he had mentioned at the corner of the east and south walls. Without a further glance in the direction Silas was supposedly standing guard she began to march resolutely to her appointment with the fox.

Hey, what do you know? ...Oh dear, she does not look happy, maybe this wasn't a good idea... Garret thought, cringing inwardly, as Tamar marched toward him. "Nice night, eh?"

"Huh, lovely." The huffy little squirrelmaid held out the wadded note. She looked at it, tried to smooth it out as best as she could and held it out again, shaking it under the fox's nose. "What exactly is this supposed to be about?"

"Okay. What, exactly, is your problem with me? Huh?" Garret asked, and looked into Tamar's eyes "Why is it that I can see the hatred in your eyes, despite the fact that I've done nothing to you? After the things I've been through, I don't feel like putting up with it. So I'd like to make Peace with you, at least until I leave."

She looked closely at Garret. She still didn't want to believe that a fox was an ally of the Abbey. "Saol thinks Martin sent you." She used the Abbess's first name. It was an old habit since they had grown up together. "Are you really fighting with us and not against us?" She didn't wait for an answer and rushed on to explain. "My parents were killed by vermin. My grandfather brought me here where he thought we would be safe and just a few days ago I was held at knife point by a Marlfox. You'll have to excuse me but it's just really hard for me to believe that you are really on our side. Why? Why would you help us?"

"Because my family was noble, before I watched them murdered before my vary eyes. All of them, struck down before me, and then the beast that did it gave me this scar." Garret said, pointing to the large scar running accross his left eye "Prior to that I would have gladly helped you anyway, but now, I have made an oath to make sure that no just beast will suffer if there is a thing I can do to prevent it." he said, turning away "As well as that, my family's creed has three parts. One: Stay thy blade from the flesh of the innocent. Two: Help those of the just and the innocent who are in need. And Three: Never endanger the clan." he turned back to Tamar "So you see, other then the other reasons, being a, no, the last, member of my clan, I have to help defend this Abbey." that was the first time the fox had revealed the family creed, ever. It bothered him, but he knew it was nessesary, and it didn't matter to keep it a secret anymore, anyway.

His words had a profound effect on her. "I'm sorry, Garret." She looked down so she didn't have to look him in the eye when she said it. "I watched my parents murder also. Let's let bygones be bygones." Then she looked up seriously. "Your family has a very noble creed. I'm sure they'd be very proud of you. I for one would be proud to fight beside you."

By now Silas was wandering along the south wall towards Garret and Tamar, just in case things got violent. It didn't look like it would, even from this distance, but it paid to be sure rather than assume things. His sword hit against his leg each step he took, and he stopped to adjust it for a second time on the wall.
Now I know why I don't wear this here... He thought. He glanced back at the squirrelmaid and the fox, seeing that they were getting along. Well, that was good...

Bryan had finally located Sev, midway along the west wall.. "Sergeant," he said, "We have movement along the northern wall, near the small wallgate. What are your orders, sir?" Sev thought for a moment, grinned, and disregarding the traditional Salamandastron war cry, said "Oya, ner vode!!" At this, all the hares were instantly on alert and passed the word. Strolling quickly along the wall, heading to the north wall. Picking two hares, he whispered "Stand guard at the northern wallgate." Immediately, the two hares silently walked to the gate and drew weapons. Sev spotted Phil and walked quickly to him. "We might have an attack underway. Position yourself on the north wall." Turning to Bryan, he said "Find Silas and tell him what's happening." Bryan descended the stairs, and dashed across the Abbey lawn toward the south wall, where he had spotted Silas earlier. However, with his black fur, he looked a lot like a black rat running through the grounds.

((I kinda have to wait for Garret to respond before I can reply with Tamar *shrugs*))
"Certainly, Sah. Right away." Phil saluted his officer and hurried to obey, trotting across the Abbey grounds to the northwall steps after the other two patrolers Sev had already sent in that direction. He'd been told growing up that there was a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time for peace and a time for war. He had done his mourning earlier that day and then he had danced with joy when he had learned the possibility that she was still alive. He had lived in peace all his life; now it was time for him to fight. The young hare took up his position on the battlements and strung an arrow to his bow. Then he began to scan the tree line looking for signs of movement.
