Ally squeezed his paw and fell into step beside him. She wondered if the Badger Lord had any idea that this would happen when he sent Jeremy along on the trip to protect her. Badgers had a funny way of knowing things. "When we get there," his joking that lightened her mood considerably and she was now able to converse quite easily with him as they walked along. "I'll fix that tunic up properly. I won't have my beau going to meet a superior officer lookin' like a flippin' ferret after a famine."

"Do I really like a ferret after a famine?"asked Jeremy worriedly. "Maybe we'll stop by the stream and clean up on the way to look more presentable." he said, mentally charting a course that would take them by a watercourse.

"No of course not." Ally bit her lip, sorry that she had upset him. She knew now she would have to be more careful mentioning outward appearance to the sensitive hare. "I'm the one who must look like a bloody half starved wreck. You look distinguished." She straitened his uniform collar with a smile.

"You don't look bad at all." said Jeremy. "We probably should stop at a stream anyway. I can wash the blood out of my tunic and get some of this blood off of me. I hate walking around coated in vermin blood."

"I wouldn't mind a good soak," She was reminded of the heated baths she had taken at the mountain in water warmed from the forge. "But that stream water's bound to be flippin' freezin' especially this time of year. We might even have to brake through the ice to get to it." She remained close to him hoping that her presence would take away some of the discomfort he was feeling.

"It won't be too bad. Its almost summer. Besides, on a day like today, I would love a cold shower." said Jeremy. He waas indeed put more at ease by her presence. "I actually prefer cold water to hot."

Ally grinned not looking at him. She had been largely sheltered, growing up at the mountain but she couldn't have lived that close to a barrack room and be completely innocent of the working of the minds of male beasts. "Are you saying, Sah, that after being in my presence just this little while you are in need of a cold shower?" She teased him but at the same time she was a bit curious to know if she could, by doing nearly nothing, bring about 'that sort' of response in him. She blushed at her own train of thought.

"No, not at all." Jeremy replied, semi-convincingly. "Cold water makes it easier to get blood off." said Jeremy, it was true, but he was still slightly embarassed at what she was implying. The embarassing part was, it was partially true.

Ally was chastened by his responce. She bit her lip and walked on for a while in silence. What a horrid girl he must think me. She wondered if she should apologize or if it would only make things more awkward. Finally she decided it would be best to just change the subject. "Have you ever been to Redwall, Jeremy?" And then she remembered. "Oh yes, you have . . . when Mater . . ." It was the place they had taken the bodies after the battle. She sobered instantly. She had shed all her tears for her mother but it was still hard to think about her final battle and her last resting place.

"Yes, right after the battle where your mother lost her life. If you wish, we can stop by the battlefield on our way to the Abbey." said Jeremy. "It's on the way. If you don't thats quite understandable."

She shot a look at him. She had never thought about actually seeing the battlefield. Her imagination ran wild, seeing in her mind's eye the blood staining the grass and the mangled bodies of vermin and hares strewn about grotesquely. She shut her eyes and shook her head to rid it of the image. Of course it wouldn't be like that now so many seasons after the fact. She wasn't sure what her reaction would be to seeing the place. Would she break down again or would it be healing? She was curious about her mother's last moments and that seemed to settle the decision for her. Jeremy would be there of course if she needed support in that moment. "Yes," she told him quietly, already looking to him for strength. "I think I would like to go there."

"Alright then." said Jeremy, altering his line of march slightly. "We should be there in an hour or two." Jeremy marched quietly, having slipped into the Long Patrol's habit of moving quietly through the woods.

Ally watched him admiringly as he marched. She remembered seeing him drill with the other recruits at the mountain. It would have been the group she was with if she hadn't been allowed to take up her sewing instead. "Jeremy, do you remember that day you caught me skipping out of weapons instruction?" She asked casually.

Jeremy smiled. "Not too many details. I do remember catching you though." he said. What happened that she's bringing it up now? he wondered to himself, slightly confused at the sudden conversation.

"I don't think I ever thanked you for not tattling on me to the Sargent." It was nice just walking with him and talking, different from when they were traveling with Choco. She liked it very much. "I could have gotten into big trouble. That was before Mater and Pa spoke up and made my excused for me." Then she looked at him curiously. "Why didn't you say anything?"
