Laney looked at the bleeding otter fearfully. She had never seen a creature in that state. For a few moments she was rooted to the spot just staring. Then she remembered that Catori had asked her to fetch the healer. She shook her head to clear it and ran back in the direction from which they had come.

"Sardra, Marm," she called when she came to the old ottermum's tent. "There's a creature who's hurt."

Sardra poked her head out of the tent flap, "By creature you mean otter, cause I don't treat no other creatures but otters."

"Yes, marm an otter he's bleeding everywhere and they said something about poison." Laney babbled excitedly.

"Poison you say, I'll need a few things," She drew back into the tent but called back out through the fabric, "stay there you can take me to them once I get my things."

Laney paced back and forth as the healer readied herself then she led the old otter fixer to the spot where the warrior lay.

"What have we here?" Sardra asked him.

Catori looked up from his work as he heard the old otter fixer speak. I dunno who he is, but he's been stabbed by a poisoned blade. I did all I could for him, Ma'am. I don't even know how he had the strength to crawl here. By rights, he should be dead. The poison was a combination of Wolfbane and Arsenic from what I can guess.

Sardra looked Catori up and down impressed at his assessment of the situation. "You've done well for him. As well as I could do with what you had at hand. I think it would be best to bring him back to my tent can you carry him?"

Laney stood behind her looking worried.

((Tibb is it ok if Catori carries your carri back to the healer's tent?))

Catori looked at the wounded otter for a moment, sizing him up in his mind, before he nodded. Aye, I could carry him for you, but I'm not sure if moving him's the best idea right now. That wound's a right nasty one, and movin' 'im around might only set it to bleedin' everywhere all over again. What do you think, Ma'am?

Sardra listened to Catori's worry and then looked back down at the strange otter. His chest had stopped rising and falling. She put a paw to his throat to feel for his pulse. There wasn't one. She sighed. She had been to late. Then she stood. "Doesn't matter now, mate, this'n's dead. Bring him back to my tent. Least we can do is give the creature a decent burial. I'll prepare the body and if you'll just inform the skipper, you can forget this ever 'appened." Suddenly she looked back over her shoulder and noticed Laney. "First see to your wife."

Lalena had at that moment broken out of her shocked state. She was horrified by what she had witnessed and her earlier nausea returned with a vengeance. She turned her back on the scene and dry heaved into the undergrowth, grabbing the trunk of a sapling for support.

Catori wiped his paws off hastily and rushed over to her, gripping her shoulders worriedly. Laney? What's wrong? He rubbed her back and stroked her head fur gently in an attempt to soothe her. He knew what was wrong already. He felt like being sick himself, but he figured talking about it might help her feel a little better about it.

"I think I need to go lay down . . . and maybe some water." Lalena answered brokenly. She leaned heavily on her husband. "I've never seen anything like that before, never seen any beast that bad off." Never seen any beast die, she continued in her thoughts. She closed her eyes tightly and fought back the erge to vomit again. There was nothing in her stomach now anyway.

Catori nodded understandingly and helped her back up tot he cabin. When they were inside, he helped her onto the bed and went to get some water for her.

When Catori returned with the water Laney looked at him strangely. She'd been thinking. When she'd seen the broken body of that poor creature she had remembered something, something seemingly unrelated. She had remembered the red light that she had once seen in her husband's eyes. And then the question was out of her mouth before she could stop herself. "Did you ever . . . I mean did you ever see . . . when you were . . . away?" As soon as she said it she wished she hadn't. She knew he didn't want to talk about that time, didn't want to re-live it, didn't want her to have to know what he suffered. "I'm sorry," she said quickly. "I don't know what made me . . ."

Catori sighed quietly and stroked her head fur reassuringly as he handed her the water. He'd known this would happen eventually. He'd known that she would ask about what happened. He sat on the side of the bed and held her paw in his gently. You don't have anything to be sorry for, Love. I knew you would ask me one day. I didn't want to tell you until I'd gotten a better handle on my... condition. But to answer your question, yes. I have seen things like that done. I've even had them done to me, although I never died from it for some reason.

Laney smiled in spite of herself. "I'm glad you didn't." She put a hand on her stomach thinking about their little one, "very glad. And it seems like you have got a better handle on things. I mean I saw, that one day, that light in your eyes. But the past couple weeks, I never, I don't know. I just don't ever want you to have to experience that again." She made herself stop speaking and take a drink of water. It burned a bit on her throat that was raw from retching. She began once again to think about food. The idea was mostly repulsive but she knew the baby needed her to eat.

Catori nodded and stroked her muzzle gently in a gesture of affection. You feel up to eating anything or not just yet? We can wait a bit if you want, so long as you eat something sometime today.
