The formerly prestine blue sky that had been hovering above the woods had started to darken and threaten rain as Lord Greysburrow approached Redwall Abbey. He strolled along the dirt road, using his gold topped cane in unison with his steps. Shuddering at the unexpected cooling of the weather, the otter pulled his cape tighter around his body to block out the wind. Hopefully, he would be in doors before the storm broke. As he continued down the path, Graysburrow looked upon the Abbey with awe, his eyes delighted at what they saw. The old building remained impressive after all this time. He had seen it before, of course, but this time... was different. The stately otter arrived at the gates just as the first few drops of rain began to fall. Not wanting to be left at the mercy of the elements, Greysburrow banged on the door with his cane head, hoping someone was attending the gate house.

Lois growled softly a little annoyed that there was no other beast present to answer the knock at the gate. She supposed those on wall duty had left it early for supper without waiting for their relief. Someone would be getting an ear full from a none to happy badgermum about that. "Who is it?" she called through the stout oak timbers.

Graysburrow was slightly at the voice emiting from behind the doors rather than the walltop as he had been expecting, but a few drops of rain on his nose quickly brought him back to his senses. He pulled his cape tighter as he replied back to voice. "Ah, good day, madam! I am the Lord Greysburrow. Am I to understand that this is Redwall Abbey?"

"This is Redwall Abbey but I am not familiar with any Lord Greysburrow. What is your business here, Sir?" She was relatively new to the Abbey herself but she took her position seriously and was fiercely protective of those in her charge.

The otter removed a folded piece of paper from his shirt pocket. I'm a senior partner of the South East Trading company. I was summoned here by a Mr..." he glanced at the paper, "Farthings, who claimed to be staying here."

"I'm not sure I'm aware of anybeast named Farthings here in the abbey," As Lois was saying this the relief wall guard, a young shrew came running up across the lawn. Lois looked at him disappointedly.
"Sorry I'm late, Marm," he wilted under her stare.
Lois waved away is apology, "We've got a creature here who wants admittance into the abbey." She told the shrew. "Get a look at him and tell me if there's any other beast with him."
The shrew took the wallsteps two at a time to do the badgermum's bidding. "It's just one otter, Marm, an' I don't see anyother beast with 'im."
Lois thought for another moment. She figured that otters were usually good creatures and that if worse came to worse she could take down one otter if she needed to. "Alright Mister Greysburrow, I'm going to allow you to come in. I can't authenticate your story but this Abbey is a place of peace and help to all creatures who are in need. We can offer you food and shelter if what is what you need." She lifted the bar easily and pushed open the heavy main gate as if it weighed nothing.

The large form of a giant male badger trudged down the path and stopped in front of the large main gate. He stared up at it impressedly for a moment before pounding it lightly with a huge blunt paw.

Greysburrow could only stare in disbelief and ecstacy as the doors of the Abbey opened. Hundreds of vermin had smashed their heads into the walls to try and gain entry, and here he was gaining entrance via the front door. Life had its little ironies.
Slowly and almost reverantly, the otter entered the gate, taking in the full magnificence of the building. It was everything he had hoped for and more. Remembering his manners, Lord Greysburrow bowed to his hostess. "Thank you most sincerely, Madam. It truly is..." he trailed momentarily upon realizing that the owner of the voice was a grown female badger. Greysburrow knew he had nothing to fear, but it was an intimidating sight if you weren't expecting. "It truly is an honor," he concluded. Suddenly, another knock came from the main gates. Greysburrow looked amused. "Well! It would appear that with rain comes guests! You will be running a busy Inn tonight, Madam!"

Lois called up again to the shrew on the wall. "Thought you said there was no beast with the otter?"
"This'n wasn't with 'im," the wall guard smiled at her. "This'n's a badger."
Lois threw the gate open once again. She'd been expecting a visitor for weeks now but hadn't known exactly which day he would arrive. "Osiah!" She greeted her younger brother with a hug.

Osiah grinned happily and hugged her back. Hey, Sissy. How've you been? He was so happy to be back. He'd missed his sister dearly while he'd been out wandering.

"It's so good to see you." Lois held her brother back at arms length to get a better look at him. "I'm glad you got the message that I was here. I wasn't sure how to contact you. It's been kind of hard to keep in touch these last few seasons. But I finally found a place where I was needed. What do you think?" She raised a paw to indicate the Abbey behind her.

Osiah smiled and nodded approvingly. This place is wonderful, Lois. How'd you find it? How long have you been here? Exactly what do you do here?

"I came this way to find, Brockhall. You remember the old badger place Grandmum told us about. Well I found it and a couple of dibbuns along the way. I can't wait for you to meet them. Anyway it's not far from here. A little Redwall otter appeared on my doorstep one day. I brought him back here and found they needed me to stay and kind of watch over things." She patted her brother on the back. "What about you? What have you been up to?"

Greysburrow kept his distance, observing the two badgers as they chatted. Information was a valuable equity, and Greysburrow desired (needed) to know these creatures better. Besides, being the good side of two badgers never hurt.
The otter gave a small bow to the newcomer in greeting. "Good day to you, sir, although it be good in speech only, and not in nature. I see that I am the only true stranger here, yourselves being kin and all. But I would enjoy rectifying that as soon as possible. Let us enter someplace warmer and drier than these outdoors. You will have to lead us, Madam, for I am unfamiliar with this place."

"Oh dear me. I am sorry." Lois had only just realized that it was raining, with the excitement of seeing her brother again. "Let's go inside. Supper's on the table. Just give me a second." She pulled the gate shut and dropped the heavy beam into place. Then she waved up to the wall guard and ushered the guests towards the Abbey door. "Just wait till you taste Redwall cooking. It'll spoil you on anything else for life."
