Drask shrugged his shoulders, "I got a call from an old friend of mine. He wanted me to help him out in Alaska." The wild, untouched wilderness of Alaska was one of the places Drask wanted to travel to in his lifetime, it seemed he was going to cross it off his list of places to go. It wasn't until he was sixteen that he was inspired to be an explorer. That was the year he met his uncle, Travis Wolfe, who enjoyed the same things Drask did. Drask didn't even know he had any family except his mother, until that rainy Seattle day when Travis came for a visit. And with his uncle came stories of the world. Those stories inspired Drask to want to do the same thing. Travis also bought the very Mustang they were driving in. He was like the father Drask never had.

Penny wasn't quite satisfied with the short answer so she tried to get some more information out of him. "I wonder that Alaska is like. Do you think it's terribly cold? And isn't the sun up all the time this time of year?" She couldn't really imagine it. It all seemed so foreign to her.

"A lot of the stuff they say about Alaska isn't true. It's not always freezing cold up there, but it does stay daytime the whole summer, if you live in the far northern part of the state. Hence the name, 'Land of The Midnight Sun.'" Drask wasn't sure why Penny had taken such a sudden interest in Alaska, maybe it had to do with him going up there for a while. He continued driving through Seatac, Drask felt a bit better after getting to drive his car; and because of getting to see Penny again.

Penny rolled her eyes and laughed, "That makes sense. Still I think that would totally mess with my internal clock." She was from a place that was much closer to the equator and rather liked the equality of day and night. "It's supposed to be really pretty up there though: the glaciers and all."

Drask laughed along with her, "It would do the same to me, except I'm so used to changing time zones it doesn't affect me much anymore. Yeah, that's one of the things that draws beasts to Alaska, that beautiful terrain and scenery up there." He hadn't yet been that far north, but his uncle told him about it a few years back.

Penny was still smiling but her voice was softer and her tone more serious when she answered him again, "I sure would like to see it someday." Although at the moment she couldn't imagine anything being prettier than the sunset that was before them. "Wow," she whispered as she had earlier upon her first look at the sight. "Would you look at that? Hey why don't you pull over for a minute and we'll just watch it." It was an impulsive idea and she didn't really know why she had suggested it she just couldn't bear to let this moment pass.

Drask nodded and pulled his car over, to watch the sunset over the volcano, Mt. Rainer. It was an extraordinary sight that only beasts in Washington could enjoy, no where else had a mountain like Rainer. That was one reason Drask's apartment was in Seattle; it was one of the few cities that you could view nature so closely, from the three mountains nearby, to the Puget Sound, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. A slight smile crept onto his face as he watched the sunset.

"I'm going to miss this when I'm back in Arizona." She wondered if he knew she meant the company as well as the view. And again she was struck with the idea that she didn't really want to go back. She sighed and slouched in her seat regretting that this all had to come to an end very soon.

The sun began to disappear, and moments later, it was gone from sight. Drask nodded, "I know, there's nothing that can compare with Washington." He started up his car again and drove them back in the direction of the hotel. Drask wasn't looking forward to saying good-bye the final time to Penny, but he knew he had to say it sometime, he hated to think of how much he would miss her. He thought about the short list of friends he had here; Vern, Wes, and he now crossed Penny off that small list.

Penny watched the now shadowed scenery roll by outside the car windows and a realization came over her. She wasn't sure if it was bravery or panic that made her do it, but when they stopped at a red light, Penny reached out and put her paw over his on the steering wheel. "I really don't want to stay in a hotel tonight." She didn't want to give him the wrong idea. It wasn't as if she was throwing herself at him or something. She just didn't want to be alone. "Do you . . . I mean I don't want to impose or anything, but do you have a couch I could crash on or something?"

Drask's eyes widened in complete surprise at what Penny said. What did she mean by that? It could be several things. The first that came to his mind wasn't something he would have expected from Penny. But then she asked if he had a couch to sleep on, and that made him realize what she wasn't asking. "Oh, uh..... Yeah, I guess you could stay there tonight." Drask was at a loss for words at that moment, and he didn't see the light go from red to green, but he quickly noticed this when the cars behind him started honking there horns. He drove on from there, taking a left onto I-5 again, heading to his apartments.

Suddenly Penny flushed bright red under her fur. "Oh gosh, that sounded like . . . I didn't mean . . . I'm sorry, Drask. I mean I like you but I certainly didn't mean. . . ." She rambled on in apology and then sat there in silence biting her lip. She realized that she had also admitted to liking him and wondered if he had noticed.

Drask shook his head, "Then what did you mean, Penny?" He didn't know what to think now, she had said she liked him, Drask kept his mouth shut after that, not wanting to start rambling on again about something else pointless. This wasn't his specialty, and it was beginning to tell.

Again Penny stared out the window so she didn't have to look at him but she did catch sight of his reflection in the glass and tried to judge his expression. "You're a good friend, Drask." She said quietly, almost to herself. "Maybe I'm just not ready to say good bye." Then her volume raised a bit and she tried to inject some humor into her words. "and anyway I never did like hotel rooms. I can never decide which bed to sleep on and I have to set the alarm to wake me up in the middle of the night so I can switch to the other one to make sure I've got my money's worth."

A hint of a smile lit his face for a split second after Penny said he was a good friend before he concentrated back on driving. Then he responded to Penny's comment about hotels. "Huh, I've never liked staying at hotels either, it all seems way to neat and organized in a room there," This time he caught himself before continuing talking.
