"Geez, why do males always have to pull those things out and show them off." Tamar laughed good naturedly as she crossed the Great Hall quickly to confront the two foxes. When she reached them she dropped her voice to a whisper. "Seriously guys, some of the less militant members of the staff are getting a little freaked out. So could you tone it down just a tad?"

"Oh, ah, sure, miss." Leon said, holding up a paw. A5 simultaneously stowed their equipment, and made themselves busy helping out.
"Allow me to carry those."
"I can handle that, don't worry about it."
"I'll take care of this laundry, ma'am, just enjoy your afternoon."
"May I help you with that?"
"Sorry, that's just, ah, what we do, I guess, miss...?" Leon trailed off, scratching the back of his head.

"It's alright," Tamar smiled and sat down across the table from the fox. She had gotten used to seeing all the weapons and soldiers. It couldn't be helped if she wanted to be near Silas. "So does Garret really think all this is necessary?"

Jasyn turned to her. "He honestly hopes not. He'd rather pull this off as painlessly as possible, but no harm in being prepared, right?" The fox shrugged. "I myself have done a few missions with him, and know a little about how he works. He doesn't like prolonging any conflict, and doesn't like seeing too much bloodshed." Jasyn laughed, "So, if we're all lucky, nobody innocent will get hurt, and most of these soldiers can go home safely." The merc dropped his voice though, and looked around forbodingly. "Personally, I don't think it'll be that cut and dry."

Leon spoke up. "He's right. That's exactly how Garret is... But, I don't know what he's doing right now. There's something he isn't telling us. He doesn't need privacy to get reinforcements on standby. Especially when we're here. As you may or may not know, Jasyn is the best mercenary on earth, last I checked, and We are the best military unit that has existed since the Spartans. Except we have guns.
Then there's Garret. He's... different. He was part of some military program, something classified, and I haven't been able to figure it out, but he's... different now." Leon said, slowly, unsure of what he was saying.
"I know one thing, if his reinforcements show up, they'll be others from his unit. Then we'll find out exactly what he did.
And I've heard about Silas as well. I've also heard that you are a wee bit of a crack-shot, Mrs. Hawkeye. Unless I have you mistaken for somebeast else.
All in all, I think we're good for defense if anything happens. Like Garret, though, I pray nothing does. There are so many civilians here.
At that moment, Garret burst in.
"Alright, I've got groups of choppers on standby for a large scale evac. We need to find everbeast who wants out, and send them outside to be picked up. I'm going up to the abbot's chambers to make the announcement. Leon, I want you and A5 out there. Try to give off the sense that the abbey will be safe to anybeast that's leaving. I'm not going to let these beasts think that they're going to come back to a crater. Tamar, if you could come with me, I don't know if they'll all want to hear my gravely tones telling them to leave."
"Jasyn, find Silas. It's still his job to take care of this place. He can't stop me, but I'd like to know that he's in agreement with me."

"Well, Si's taught me a thing or two. . ." Tamar was humbly putting off the complement when Garret burst in.
She nodded in response to Garret's request of her. "I must warn you though a lot of them won't want to leave. This is their home. For some of them it's the only home they've ever known. They'll insist on staying as I will even though . . . " Tamar looked down at her paws. She hated keeping this secret. "Garret, you can't tell Silas but . . ."
She was interrupted by a mouse brother, one of the kitchen helpers. "How many more will there be for supper, Tamar?"
"You know I'm not sure," she answered him and looked again at Garret still blushing slightly from the news she had been about to share with him. "How many extra mouths will we be feeding tonight?"

"We need to know who's leaving first... And, really, none. I mean, there's me, Jasyn, Leon, and his four, so... seven. The guys I have ready aren't coming until it's necessary... After all, they technically don't exist." Garret said, and looked at Tamar.
He was puzzled about what she may have been getting ready to tell him. He nodded toward the hall. "We should probably get this over with..." He said, and leaned toward Tamar, then whispered "Tell me when we get there. It seems something you want to keep as friends-only information."
"All right, you have your orders, get to it. Oh, and Silas's room is in the attic, Jasyn."
"Let's move, USSFEST. I want you suited up, and out on the grounds, ASAP."
The Legendary Soldier Fox(Ye'll see where this nickname comes from, later) then gestured for Tamar to come with him to the abbot's chambers.

Tamar looked back at the mouse brother. He was just standing there open mouthed and Tamar pitied him.
"They really want us to leave our home?" he asked, watching Garret go.
"It'll only be for a little while, Theo. Bess has a sister you can go and stay with doesn't she?"
"But we've always lived in the Abbey. Our little Nina was born here. She's down at the pond with her friends right now." He looked towards the pond as if he could see it through the wall.
"Well this is really the best way to keep them safe, Theo. Just get your things and you and Bess can come back as soon as the trouble is passed." Tamar tried to give him an encouraging smile but he ran off to find his family. Tamar frowned and followed after Garret. "This isn't going to be pretty," she mumbled.

"When is it?" Garret answered, shaking his head, and stopping momentarily. He turned to Tamar.
"This is hard on all of us... I have something I need to do, for somebeast I care about... but right now, defending the creatures that live in this abbey is more important. I don't know if I'll be able to help her, now. I've called in the last of my favors here, and it's something I won't be able to pull off alone." He said, and then started marching down the hall again, resolute.

Tamar rolled her eyes and hurried after him. "That's not what I meant. There's no beast here who doesn't appreciate what you're doing. It's just that these creatures are frightened enough seeing soldiers walking around the halls. What we're about to announce to them is likely to start a mass panic." Catching up and matching his stride she tried to smile, "Thanks for letting me make the announcement by the way. I do think they'll take it a little easier this way."

"Yeah, it's definitely better. I think they'd all lose it if they heard ME telling them to leave. After all, I sound like death. In a good way, I have a pleasant enough voice... You know what I mean." Garret said, smiling back, and stopped in front of a door.
"Uh... Is this it? I don't see a sign... Anywhere. Is there one? I'd assume..."

"Yep this is the place," Tamar stepped past him and knocked on the door. While they were waiting she mumbled awkwardly. "About what I was saying earlier . . ."

"Yes, about that... what was it you were going to tell me?" Garret asked, leaning against the door frame, and looking to see if there was anybeast else, who wasn't a part of the conversation. There wasn't. I hope she's not going to say what I think she is.

Tamar also looked around before she spoke, "Well it's really rather embarrassing. I mean nobeast expects. . . well especially since we we were trying to prevent . . . but then nothing works 100% of the time." She had been pacing through this rambling speech but now she forced herself to stop and took a shuddering breath. She didn't look at him as she continued, "Garret, I'm . . ." and then the door opened and the Abbot stepped out. Tamar was instantly and miraculously composed, "Good afternoon, Sir Abbot. Mr. Strife has just arrived and wished to speak to you."

Garret had been looking away, when he turned and faced the abbot, smiling warmly.
"Ah, yes. Abbot Johnathan, isn't it? I was wondering if we could use the loudspeakers for just a moment. There's an unfortunate announcement that must be made." He said, still smiling, though his eyes told the real story, that something was about to be very troubling to Johnathan.
