Your character's full name: Captain Rabitha Verbane “Vermin Bane” Braebuck
Age: Adult (40 ish)
Species: Hare
Gender: Female
Appearance: Ol' Vermin Bane was a strong warrior in her day: long and thin and strong of limb. She looks quite a bit like her daughter Alouette except for the slight sprinkling of silver fur among the auburn. And her twenty/twenty vision has never warranted the use of spectacles like Ally's. Her vision was actually one of her best qualities as a Long Patrol sharpshooter and has been known to cloud over in bloodwrath on at least two occasions.
Now however she has been lying in an infirmary bed for nearly two seasons and has therefore lost a lot of her muscle mass.
Belongings: She owns nothing except the infirmary robe that was given to her upon her arrival at the Abbey.
Job or Position: Captain Vermin Bane Braebuck was one of the greatest sharpshooter longbow beasts that the Long Patrol had ever seen two seasons ago but that was before the attempted poisoning that took her memory and nearly took her life. She no longer remembers who she is or why she is in the Abbey infirmary. She has heard one of the kind beast who are caring for her mention the plant verbane as a medicine ingredient and that rings a bell but she has no idea why. The name Ally also comes to her mind when she hears someone mention Allin but there again she does not remember ever having been the mother of two leverets.
Personality: Verbane (as we will now call her) was once a perilous fighter. She didn't see herself as having been cut out to be a wife and mother although she did love her husband and children dearly. When the leverets were out of dibbunhood and the call was raised for fighters once again she left the mountain of Salamandastron to do her part. Now that she has lost those memories she is confused by the surges of anger she gets against vermin foebeasts in this apparently peaceful place which she finds herself.
History and Background Information: Rabitha Verbane Straitshot was the daughter of Long Patrol hares. The legend was that she was actually born on the field of battle: her mother had half emptied her quiver when she started to feel the pains of her labor and after Rabitha was born she emptied the other half into the horde of oncoming vermin. Rabitha officially joined the Long Patrol as soon as she was old enough to do so with her parents blessing. They were also thrilled with the match she made when she married Linden “Cap'n Breaky” Braebuck. He was called Cap'n Breaky because he made the best breakfasts that any of the Patrol hares had ever tasted. He was also from a very respected family being directly descended from Hortwill Longblade Braebuck. Rabitha liked the idea of raising her children on patrol as she had been raised but Linden couldn't imagine putting them in that kind of danger. So, when she became pregnant with their first she bowed to his will and they both took positions at the mountain: Rabitha training recruits and Lindon working in the kitchens. But this situation was more conducive to her husband's personality than it was to Rabitha's and as soon as she thought her leverets could handle her absence she left to go patrolling once again. Her final journey brought her to a battle that took place near Redwall Abbey in which an enemy poisoner sneaked into their camp and succeeded in planting his wares into the food of the officers. The poison however did not have it's full affect on her probably because she was taken with the bloodwrath at the time of the poisoning having just learned from a runner that her husband had gone on patrol with another unit and her son was threatening to do the same. The recruits from Rabitha's unit, finding their officers dead (or very nearly so) brought them hurriedly to the Abbey of Redwall to receive a proper burial, but they took along the personal effects to give to family members back at the mountain. That is how Rabitha was left at Redwall with no hint of her identity other than the fact that she was an officer of the Long Patrol who was presumed to be dead.
Any other details: I can't assume to guess what runs through the minds of Abbey dwellers but I would assume that seeing the light of bloodwrath that occasionally would flit through the eyes of this particular patient as she experienced particularly vivid delirium induced dreams, they would choose to lead her to a more peaceful future by not mentioning the fact that she was once a part of the Blood 'n' Vinegar hares.
Not important to the character but interesting to know is the fact that when I was a dibbun I had a stuffed toy rabbit that I named Rabitha. I was only 3 or 4 years old and I thought it was a clever play on the name Tabitha. It was one of those toys that I never quite could get rid of and when my oldest son who is now 5 ½ years old become obsessed with all things bunnies after reading 'The Runaway Bunny' by Margaret Wise Brown, it was passed on to him. He still calls it Rabitha and the bunny he made at the Build-a-Bear workshop for his birthday last year is officially named Lindin.
