In the woods of Mossflower, trouble was brewing. Some tall oaks bordered a small stream, and a cool wind blew though. The barely shone through the clouds, and it was quite cold.
Sitting on a smooth stone, a wildcat with sleek black fur with white paws. A white mark was on her forehead, and the tip of her tail was white. She wore a dark green Capri and top, and a brown cloak was wrapped around her. What looked like a leather pack was beside her, and she was fishing. A shiver ran up her spine, but she continued. "This weather is horrible." she muttered to herself.

A large wolverine wandered aimlessly through the deep forest behind the wildcat. His brown cloak was resting on his shoulders, and his hood was up. He had gotten a whiff of the weather, and he decided to take no chances. His decision proved profitable when the proverbial flood gates crashed open with a loud peal of thunder and a bright flash, and the clouds began to weep. The wolverine flattned his ears on his head as the cold tears splashed on him. The trees were barely cover enough for the monumental downpour. His yellow eyes sweeped the forest for some kind of shelter, and they rested on the wildcat. "Well, well," he murmered, "what have we here. A poor little kitten trapped in the rain. Lucky day for me."

Not noticing the wolverine, she continued to fish. Suddenly, her pole shook. She picked it up, and pulled up a fish, with silver scales. A grin swept across her face, and she sniffed it, only to turn away in disgust. "It's already dead!" she exclaimed. "What's going on?" She took a small vile from her bag, and filled it half way with water from the stream. Then she put it in her bag, and continued to fish. "Maybe it was just a coincidence," she said to herself. "I hope so..."

The wolverine slouched his shoulders and made as if a beast miserable in the rain. That actually wasn't all that difficult. The rain was bad, but Sarim had taken pleasures in the thought of torturing the wildcat. Sarim slunked over to Kisa, and sat down some feet upriver from her. He curled up, as if wickedly cold, and turned toward the cat. "Horrible rain innit? I got caught outside me home, now I wish I didn't leave. How's a-bout you missie? Why is you all caught up in this narsty rain?"

Kisa was annoyed. She looked at him. "What do you want?" She stared at him, analyzing his actions. "You wouldn't happen to know what was wrong with the stream, would you?" She folded up her pole and put it in her bad, then took out a dagger and began to sharpen it. "Besides, I like the rain. And I don't have to tell you who I am or anything like that." She eyed him carefully. She could never be to cautious.

Cautious, this was going to be a nice challenge. Sarim held up both paws. "Whoa there missie. I din mean no di'respec. I'm jes a simple travlin' beast what got caught in the cloud's sadness." Sarim turned back to the stream and stared in the fast moving water. "Just iffin ya want ta know, I'm know as Miars Rabrt Kleach. Ask almost anyone my name, an' they'll tell you I'm the kindest creture what wanders. Me mahself, I find it a bit too much. I'm just a simple beast, miss, I need no titles r' compliments on me."

Kisa looked at him, and began to think. She didn't know what he was up to, and he seemed pretty suspicious, not that she didn't look like that herself. Still, she has had many bad experiences with wolverines, and she didn't want to put this one on her list. She pulled out of her bag some dried meat, and began to eat some.

Not far from the wildcat and wolverine, a young ratmaid with black and white fur scurried from sheltered spot to sheltered spot, trying not to get too wet. Where had the sun gone to? The rat scrambled over a mossy rock, saw the two beasts, and slid back down. She crouched near the muddy ground in fear: Had they spotted her?? If so, were they bad??

Sarim wrinkled his nose. What a delicious smell, that meat. But Miars would be abstain from eating meat. Not even fish, well maybe once in awhile. The wolverine stood up and walked over, past a mossy rock, and to a large apple tree. Thank goodness the tree still had some ripe apples in its boughs. Sarim shook some of the large apples off, and they rolled in the undergrowth. He gathered them up in a loose bit of his cloak, and he carried it over to the site where the cat was. He polished one on the edge of the cloak, and offered it to Kisa. "Want an apple miss?" With his free hand, he took a different specimin and crunched deeply into the red flesh. Juice spilled down his muzzle and dripped into the stream. Of course, he mad sure to eat with his mouth closed, and to wipe his mouth off with a spare edge of his cloak.

In a sudden whir, she pulled out a bow and arrow and shot right through the apple. "If you know what's good for you," she removed the arrow and tossed the apple to him. "You'll stay away. I am not interested in 'bonding' or anything like that." She put her weapons away, and stared at the stream.

The ratmaid peeked over the edge of the large boulder and took in the scene quietly. Finally she could take sitting and waiting no longer; in youthful naivity she padded out from behind the rock, long tail waving sinously behind her. Cocking her head up at the wolverine, she asked in her cutest voice: "Canna have a apple, mista woovewine...?"

"Hold on Miss. There's no call for that!" He pulled another apple from the pile and tossed it to the ratmaid. "Here little maid, might as well you have one, more that this ungrateful kitten." The wolverine stood and bowed to the cat. "As ya wish missie. I'll leave."Yes, I'll leave. At least, untill that little witness over there makes herself scarce. Then I'll have my fun with ye.

Kisa looked at the ratmaid. "I suggest you find a place to make a fire, and arm yourself. 'Kind' people like that wolverine aren't everywhere, and he's up to something." She collected her things and jumped off the rock, and turned to the ratmaid again. "By the way, something is wrong with the river. All the fish are dead." She began to walk away.

The ratmaid's eyes widened in shock: The fish were dead??? But she had wanted to fish... Noticing the young wildcat was going away, she hurried to catch up. Still clutching the apple to her in both paws, she walked alongside the cat. "What is yore name?",she asked curiously.

Kisa turned to the little ratmaid, and she showed no emotion "It's Kisa. And you are..."
