Mossflower wood lay quiet in the pitch black of night, practically no moonlight shone upon the forest, giving the peaceful silence an eerie twist to it. A rustle broke that silence as a creature rushed through the undergrowth, running northwest to the ford. The hooded creature was making decent headway, but it seemed that he was being pursued by somebeast.

A large, burly otter's ears perked instantly as he heard a rustle in the nearby bushes. The reddish brown fur on the back of his neck bristled as he snarled in silent warning to any would-be attackers.

The creature seemed to be advancing in the otter's general direction, unknowingly so, for every five steps he took, he glanced over his shoulder, fear evident upon his face, that of a ferret.

The large otter saw the ferret coming closer and drew his dagger silently as he watched. Another large otter saw the ferret as well and readied her ash stave nervously. She may have been a brilliant fight, but she was still fairly young and got nervous when fighting sometimes.

The ferret continued his headlong rush, moving past an elm tree. But when he came back on the other side of it, he yelled out in a cry of suprise and fear as he fell to the ground. A male fox, young and fit, stood grimly over the thief. He knelt down and put a dagger across the ferret's throat as he attempted to run. The fox's voice was a cold and threatening murmur, as cold as the black night that surrounded them.
"Don't move, or by Hellsteeth I'll kill ye."
The ferret gulped carefully but didn't reply, for two reasons: the mere fear of being the hunted, and the fact that a dagger was pressed against his throat.

The otter watched grimly and curiously, wondering what the fox would do to the ferret and wondering exactly what the conflict was between them. The female's eyes widen with fear as she also watched the confrontation between the two and kept a firm grip on her staff. She hoped she wasn't about to witness a coldblooded killing, but prepared herself for it nonetheless.

The fox eyed the beast with disgust. The ferret was gazing back wide-eyed at him in fear, trying to think of how to beg for his miserable life. Strangely, though, the ferret's eyes were a crimson red, the color of blood. The fox found that odd, but nonetheless spoke again in his cold voice, "Give me my sword, or I'll trade you my dagger for it." He emphasized this point by pressing just a tad harder with the dagger agains tthe Ferret's throat. Of course the vermin obliged, practically throwing the sheathed weapon at him. The fox grabbed it with his free paw and set it aside, making as if to let the ferret go.
Seeing this, the thief tried to get up and leave. But as he attempted to depart, the fox rounded on him in a blur, moving so fast that it might remain a dispute as to whether he actually stabbed the ferret or beat him over the head. Either way, the crimson-eyed ferret slumped over, while the fox took back his sword, resembling, oddly, a katana. He picked this up and attached it to his belt, then took a pace away fromt he fallen ferret.

Both otter's eyes widened stunnedly at what they had seen. They didn't know whether the ferret was dead or not or whether the fox was friend or foe, but they weren't going to take any chances. The female took a nervous step back and accidentaly stepped on a dry stick which snapped underpaw.

The fox then turned his head to face the noise, still holding his dagger. Seeing the otters, he stood motionless for a second, only his lips moving, his body language somehow relaxed, as if there was some regret behind his actions but otherwise he did what he had to do. "I see I have an audience." He spoke. "He's not dead, in case you're wondering. I'm not like his kind." His voice, though still retaining a bit of its former self, was not that of a half-insane cold-blooded killer, but, strangely enough, that of a warrior instead.

Both otters relaxed when they knew there was no threat. The larger otter stepped forward and held out his hand politely. My name's Riolobo, but you can just call me Rio. Following his example, the female stepped forward also and bowed respectfully. I'm Marisol, but you can call me Mari. If you don't mind me asking, what brings a fox like yourself to this neck of the woods?

The fox shook Rio's paw and nodded at Mari in turn, replying to her question by gesturing with a flick of his tail and the movement of his head in the general direction of the ferret. "He stole my sword, so I thought I might get it back..." he patted the hilt of the katana with a paw.

Rio glanced at the sword for a moment and nodded in approval. That's a fine blade you got there. I can understand you wanting to get it back. If I may be so bold, What's your name?

The fox sighed, but answered the otter regardless. "They call me Ghost." He stated simply. "I'm afraid I can't tell you my real name." He added, obviously holding something back from the otters. meanwhile, the ferret did not stir, but something metallic, a shining circlet rolled from the creature out onto the grass. The fox, now identified as Ghost, bent down to examine it. It was a tailring, crafted of purest gold, inevitably stolen from its owner.

Mari nodded her acknowledgement and smiled. That's a nice name. Whether it's your real one or not, I like it. She tilted her head curiously when she saw the tailring, wondering who it could've come from. No doubt it had been stolen from someone.

Ghost held onto the tailring, and searched the ferret for anything else. A dagger and a vial of poison was all he found besdes the ring. He threw the other items out into the undergrowth, the dagger imbedding itself point-first intot he ground while the vial remained unbroken, skidding to a halt next to a pine tree's root system. He sighed and glanced at the tailring again, feeling the cold metal underpaw. "Wonder who had this..." He asked himself.
