Jane nodded and returned his smile. "And you really want to marry me, I mean not just the act or whatever it is for everybeast else, but really forever, till death do we part?" Jane wondered at her own choice of words there. Death seemed to be around just about every corner here in the zone, but couldn't one of them just as easily be hit by a bus or something back in New York?

"Yeah, not just some kind of act, something real." Vrelt had never expected to find himself in this situation, he had never thought anything like this could be happening to him, but the suddenness of everything was no different from the strangeness of the zone, or its many threats. He knew that it was the truth. No matter what happened to either of them, he would love Jane still. There wasn't much else to add to their conversation, and Vrelt waited on Jane to speak, he would leave it up to her what or where they were going next.

Jane was starting to feel a little more confident with their original destination but she still took a deep breath before suggesting it again. "Then shall we go and see if they've gotten our room ready?" Ready for what, she was still a little nervous about but she knew in her heart that Vrelt would never do anything to hurt her in fact she was sure he would risk his own life to save hers that that of 'their' child. She took his hand and started to move in the general direction they had been headed in before. Moving seemed better than staying still in her present state of mind.

Anna pressed her eyes tight shut again and the tears spilled over and ran down her cheeks. She wiped them away with the back of her paw. Even through the tears she was smiling. She felt as if a lead weight had been taken off her shoulders. She felt as if she could fly but at the same time her footpaws were firmly placed on the ground. They still had to think of the present issues. "I know," she whispered and turned slowly to face him. She looked up into his eyes her own still shining. "I'll do what I can to help. I'll. . ." She tried to think of what she could do. She felt mostly useless and a lot of what they would need to do. "I'll treat injuries, I'll help keep track of supplies, or I'll just stay out of the way if you need me to." Most importantly she knew, now that she was truly aware that he shared her feelings, she would stand beside him and support him. He wouldn't have to do this alone. She smiled in what she hoped was an encouraging way. "Just tell me what to do and I'll do it." Bane was indeed relieved to see that he had gotten by with his odd and haphazard speech. He said what he meant, of course. Anna was... is... the weaselmaid for him. Or at the very least that's what he thought. They'll just have to see after this whole thing... Well, in the meantime... He stepped another pace forward, closing the gap between them, now finding the courage to take hold of her paw. His brown eyes looked back at her own, and said, "Well, um, in that case, how about we enjoy some lunch here while we still have time?" He gestured over to the foodstand near the fountain of the park. Of course, he knew that this was sort of a risky move to have them both preoccupied with 'romance' in a time of survival, but it seemed like they still had some free time to at least sit down again, maybe just chat or something... But naturally, as instinct would declare, he also had other ideas to spend what time they had alone in peace. He tried not to think about it too much, even though Anna was assuredly the most beautiful weaselmaid he'll ever see, perhaps forever. He awaited her response.

Vrelt simply nodded in response to her, he was unable to find the proper words at that instance. There was no words to put, so he walked along with her, holding her paw tightly in his. He wondered why circumstances had gone this way, it was the first time Vrelt had ever felt that way, and it was a strange feeling to him. Vrelt was a bit surprised with how eagerly Jane had asked if he was ready to check out their room, it just didn't seem like her. He still wondered how all this could happen in a matter of a few days. There wasn't anything else to say at that moment, even from a beast who used to always be talking.

Electricity shot through her at the touch of his paw and she tried to hide the tremor that ran through her. It wasn't the time. Anna sighed as if she had been holding her breath, "I'd like that." It's enough she told herself. It would have to be at least for now. She didn't want things to get too complicated. She smiled and squeezed his paw in what she hoped was a more friendly than romantic gesture. She would try to make the most of this time without getting in too deep. Internally she rolled her eyes knowing she was already in over her head.
As they walked Jane saw a creature walk by with a rifle slung over his shoulder. She was powerfully reminded of where they were and what was going on all around them. She hesitated as a shadow of doubt passed over her. "Vrelt . . ." She didn't know how to express what she was feeling. "Is this . . . right? I - I mean, we're not rushing into anything. I mean we are but . . . we're supposed to be together, right? It's not just . . ." She couldn't look at the ferret beside her. Her eyes were still fixed on the weapon that the other beast carried.

Sev started going through his bag. He placed the ammo for his Deecee on the floor next to him. His clothes were put on another chair. Digging through the food he kept at the bottom, he saw a glint of metal. What's that? he asked himself. Reaching down, he pulled a ring out of the bag. Oh yeah, that's the ring I picked up next to the whirlwind. I wonder if Vrelt would like to give this to Jane. he thought and set the ring on a counter. He finished sorting his stuff and repacked it all.

Jane's words brought sudden realization to his mind the very second she spoke them. He discovered that he couldn't just run off with her this way, when he had only met her a couple days ago. Vrelt knew he wouldn't do this if he was back home, or anywhere else for that matter; maybe it was the feeling that every passing second might bring a sudden death to either of them. Whatever it was, Vrelt knew that he shouldn't rush headlong into things. The best he could do was protect Jane until they made it out, and in the meantime, really get to know her better. It wasn't a battle that he could just charge into, it would have to go slower than he was feeling. Vrelt raised her head back to look up at him by slightly pushing on her chin, and stared into her green eyes, "You know something, you're right. We can't rush into anything like it's the last day of our lives. We need to take it slower than that."

Though she knew it was better to take things slowly something in his words also saddened her. "I guess I just got caught up with what everybeast else thought about us. I guess I just wanted to believe the story too." Jayne put a paw on her stomach as the whelp moved again. She shrugged and tried to look unaffected even though her hormones were threatening to cause her to burst into tears. She tried to look away from him again but found he held her too closely. "Guess I hoped somebeast actually wanted us." This time the 'us' referred not to she and Vrelt but to she and the illegitimate child within her. It was so much nicer to believe that her child had been conceived in love with somebeast she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.

"Hey, listen; somebeast does want both of you." Vrelt smiled slightly, "Look at your finger. Who gave you that ring? What does it symbolize? You think anything is going to change that?" He was certain that he would be with Jane, even tough he was going to take it slow. Slow by his standard might have even seemed quick in somebeast's eyes, but all would go just like they were home; unless of course the hard fact they were in the Zone. That in itself was a major obstacle. Vrelt knew that any such obstacle could and would be overcome, if only Jane saw it that way as well.

Bane smiled as well, feeling Anna squeeze his paw. As he led the weaselmaid over to the foodstand, that physical contact instantly brightened up the gloomy skies overhead, mimicking the small link that now existed between them. In all probability, that link would grow with time. He hoped so.
Okay, 'Mr. slick', head outta the clouds... He thought to himself wryly, adding to the smile a little.
The foodstand in front of them, as half of the village itself, seemed stuck in the 80's and 90's, its wooden frame and sign paited as such, though in Russian and Ukrainian characters. Two beasts, as well as many tasty smells were inside the stand. The older of the two, a greying otter, stood at the cash register, while a younger otter stood in the back, cooking away. The older one briefly looked over the approaching weasels. An odd sight, to be sure, the male of the pair dressed out in military fatigues and a vest, probably bullet-proofed underneath, with an array of pouches for rifle magazines, grenades, radios, and all manner of warlike implements. Two chrome 1911s hung in their holsters at his thighs, completing the look that just said 'soldier'. Though, his companion wasn't as warlike, to say the least, a humble civillian in the otter's eyes. Huh, violence and peace walking paw in paw. An odd sight.
Bane stopped a few steps from the counter and looked back at Anna, remembering to ask, "Um, so, what d'you want to eat? Here they have all kinds of uh, Pirozkhi and some soups..."

Jayne looked down shyly at her paw. It really wasn't an act to him. Well it wasn't an act to her either. She looked up at Vrelt and smiled, "You know it might be a little hard to take it slow considering everybeast already thinks we . . . that this one is . . ." she patted her stomach and then blushed. "We're kind of sharing a room whether we like it or not." Did she mind? She looked into his eyes. No, if he loved her as much as she was sure he did, she wanted to be with Vrelt every day and every night for the rest of her life. "What . . .Oh," She'd been staring at him lost in thought as he lead her to the foodstand. "Um, soup." She looked up at the Russian characters on the vendor's sign and it reminded her of something she had read before she left the States. "Soup, yes." Then she pronounced carefully, "Borscht?" ((LOL, Si, reminds me of my graduation. I was a big hippy and I had to walk up to get my diploma next to a Jr ROTC guy. Stupid teachers said I couldn't attend the ceremony if I was barefoot ))

"That's true. But still give it some time. You never know what will happen. At least I don't" Vrelt wondered if he chose the right words to say at that time. Hopefully they were. He knew they would be sharing a room, and he also knew that he would have liked to take it a bit slower, but anything could happen to change his mind. Plus he knew virtually nothing about dealing with relationships of any sort, besides maintaining a friendship with you best friend. This would be a challenge for him just as it was to say they needed to take it slow. But he thought he should be able to do it.
((LOL Whenever I think about ROTC guys, I think about the kids in Major Payne.))

"Da." The greying otter nodded and smiled at the weaselmaid, surprised that she could at least attempt to speak the local language. Most foreigners didn't bother with such things. But, however much he spoke the Russian language, he reverted to Ukranian, his birthtongue, by simple accident. "[Er, Which kind of soup would you like, miss? Pheasant? Fish? V-]"
Bane stepped forth and spoke in Russian, catching the otter in mid-sentence. "[Beg your pardon sir, but we do not understand Ukranian.]" "[Oh. Sorry, then.]" The otter scratched his head and spoke the question again in Russian to the pair, primarily to the weaselmaid.
