"I have a sister too, well half sister, but we're very close. Her name is Lara after the character in Doctor Zhivago. I told you my mom likes Russian Literature. Mom's on her fourth, no third husband. She never actually married Jim. She and my dad married young, I was a bit of a surprise. She just turned 40 this year." Anna raised her eyebrows in a mock scandalized manor. "They didn't last very long and then it was just she and I when I was very little and then she met Lara's father. He was wonderful. Thought she'd really found a keeper there. But I don't know, something went wrong between them about the time I left for my first year of college, and they split. That was almost harder to take for me than when she left dad." The bartender finally noticed that her glass was empty and filled it with water. She thanked him and took a drink before continuing. "Lara went to live with her dad. So I don't, I mean I didn't see her as much. I don't blame her, mom can be kind of hard to live with sometimes. Oh but listen to me I'm talking your ear off. Umm what college did you go to and what did you study?"
((okay not sure where that came from but, whatever . . .))

Throughout the whole narrative, Bane gave Anna his full attention. It was surprising to hear that she and her family had witnessed more changes than he had. Well, he was obviously assuming a lot about her. When the question came up and it was his turn to talk, Bane almost chuckled, but not quite. "Are you sure you want to hear about it? It's all boring stuff, really. In my opinion." He said that not only because he thought the subject boring, but he also liked to hear Anna talk about herself. He liked the sound of her voice, but that didn't mean he wasn't paying attention to the words being spoken.
The weasel's ears perked up as a beast slammed a paw on a nearby card table. Even though he knew what that sound, and the resounding cry in Russian meant, (Tscorzy!) it still made him a little on edge in a place like this. Looking back towards Anna, he continued after the group settled down. "Well, I decided to go after my dad and be in the Army, so I went to West Point. So, it was fun and games there until I graduated, then somehow I ended up here." He sighed and shook his head. "Now, I dunno where to go." He admitted. "I was thinking about some other stuff, though. I tried some, but it didn't work out. Basically, my resume is just gonna be one big ink splotch..." He gulped down a mouthful of his Coke.

The disturbance at the other table had also unsettled Anna a bit. Unconsciously she moved closer to the the thing she saw as the safest in the room. That being Bane himself. As he finished speaking and left the conversation in her court she realized her move and settled back smiling a little sheepishly. "I'm sure you'll figure out someday what you want to be when you grow up. I was lucky in that respect I guess. I knew what I wanted to be and if you'll excuse me for saying" she hung her head modestly "I had the brains to back it up. Never would have been able to afford school without the scholarships. Sam said, that's what kept him back. But I think he was really just a homebody and couldn't stand to leave Princeton." Anna stopped speaking abruptly as if she had said too much. She'd mentioned Sam twice in one conversation. She'd thought she'd gotten over him years ago and then he'd shown up in her life again and just as quickly he was dead. On the plane trip over he'd been telling her what he wanted to do for her birthday after they got back. He was really hoping they could get back together but Anna hadn't given him any promises. She didn't want to be stuck in Southern Indiana her whole life and now she was stuck here.

Bane noticed Anna scoot towards him at the disturbance, and instead of raising an eyebrow like he would do if she was the serving maid on the train, he smiled in return. As she talked again, he took note of the mentioning of Sam again. Putting that aside, he agreed with Anna on both counts. He would probably find his calling in life, sooner or later, and in contrast she had found hers quite easily. Sure, he had found temporary sanctuary in the Army, but it didn't last. Sighing, he shoved his drink away from himself a little, thinking upon his career path for a minute.
((Okay, um, would you mind if you or I gave this thread a sort of 'booster shot'? We can't have the conversation drag on for too long, as fun as it is... *Indicates Bane as it is his assumed opinion* Just run a time-lapse up until they have to leave or summat. If you or Anna have any questions that could be asked in that space of time, I'll answer them in PM, I guess.))

((sounds good to me. I can't think of any more questions right now but if he wants to walk her back to her apartment and tell her his name i won't complain)) Anna stifled a yawn, "Oh I'm sorry. You're not boring me I promise." She smiled tiredly. "I've been doing double shifts down at the medbay. It's exhausting work." She yawned again. "I suppose it wouldn't have been much better to do my residency in the E R like I had put in for to do in the fall." She chuckled. "But then of course I wouldn't have the odd zombie bite to brake the monotony." Anna really didn't want to leave Bane's company but she knew if she didn't get some sleep she'd never be able to get up for her next shift in the morning.

Bane smiled at Anna's comment. Though he wouldn't show it as much, he was tired as well. He had wisely stopped drinking his automatically refilled Coke a few hours earlier, lessening his overall tab at the bar. They had been there until most of the other beasts went about to nap or do a night hunt, which was only performed by the best, most courageous (Or in this case, greedy) of 'Stalkers'. Bane also would've stayed longer to talk with Anna, but he had to get ready for one of his own local searches for treasure. Well, maybe he could have an off-day, to get caught up on the happenings in the zone...
He chuckled at Anna's last comment, nodding at the first. "Yeah, you don't see those much anywhere else." He paused here a moment. "Well, I s'pose we should head down." He gestured to the residential section, or rather the stairs leading down to it. "Um... Which do you have, anyways?" He inquired. All of the rooms were numbered one through twelve. As far as he knew, most of the rooms were taken up, except five and eight.

"Oh," she began, "It's the one you found me in front of earlier. Jane is my roommate. It was easier to share and we both have plenty of room. It's number 6." Thinking of her apartment, specifically the door on which the dull brass #6 hung, reminded her of what had transpired there earlier that day. She closed her eyes and tried to block out the memory. She was almost frightened to walk back to the place she had come to think of as if not home than something resembling a welcoming refuge. She didn't want to ask him to ask him to accompany her and give into her weakness. But if he should offer she wouldn't refuse.

"Number six, huh? Me an' Grey are across the hallway then. Room five." He explained. "Grey's here year-round so we keep the room. Saves a spot for me most days." Due to the placement of his room, Bane was able to walk out right into the ferret's back that time. It was easy to hear conversations outside of the residential apartments due to the heavy wood doors rather then the metal ones in the Medbay, barracks and armoury. He gets up out of his seat to move to the room, gathering his duffel bag up as well. It had been sitting next to him the whole time. Luckily it wasn't stolen... He subtlely looks up at Anna, seeing if she had accepted to walk with him back to her apartment. But of course that silent question came out of a small speck of instinctive questioning, the traces of which lingered in everybeast. The ferret earlier had given in altogether to some of those instincts, due to his drunken state, and probably because he was ground down by the Zone and the duty beasts as well. The Zone did many things to beasts...
((Well, I've had that idea for a while now that since Anthros ARE still part animals, that they have that instinct nagging at them sometimes, obviously louder than human instinct, since we seem to have more control over ourselves through evolution. Just a random idea. *Shrugs*))

((makes sense))
Anna smiled hoping the relief didn't show too much on her face. But she did feel safer knowing that he would be right across the hall. And there was no shame in walking along side him if they were both going the same direction anyway. Then the thought came too her: if they lived this close together they were sure to see each other again. She got up from her own seat and sighed, "I'm ready if you are." She started to walk with him towards the door of the bar. Then a thought occurred to her. It wasn't a pleasant thought but she figured it was one that couldn't be avoided. "When we get there do you want me to get Jane to come out so you can, er, tell her what she has to do?"

"It might be good to tell 'er..." Bane said with regret, still knowing that she had been present when the Blood for Blood ruling was explained. Reminding her of the work didn't exactly feel good to do, but it was necessary, otherwise the smell of rotting meat might draw the scavenging flesh-eaters, the Raputre near the base. Worse than zombies, faster, possessing intelligence and reason, even setting simple traps for the unwary Stalker to fall into. They moved in smaller packs, unlike the zombies, who usually wandered alone aimlessly. But when meat or flesh was to be had, the Zombies gathered from miles around to 'eat' it. It was nasty, but that was the Zone. The weasel then gestured minutely for Anna to descend the flights of stairs leading down to the apartments. At this point he didn't know what to say, either because they had talked for several hours, or just because he was tired.

As they went on silently Anna's thoughts again returned to Sam. She couldn't help but feel partially responsible for his death. No, it wasn't as if she had aimed a gun at him as Jane had at the ferret but it was true that if she had not come on this trip, he would have never even known this place existed. She'd called her mom to let her know that she was interested in going on the mercy mission. Mom must have told everyone how her smart, brave daughter was going off to change the world. Sam had asked her about it when she came home for Spring brake. It was almost as if he was trying to get her not to go. And then a week before they left, after they had done all their fund raising and training sessions, there he was in the midst of their last planning mission. He had paid his way with the money he had been saving for a new truck after wrecking the first one. Anna knew he was only going because she was, that he wanted somehow to protect her. He hadn't been through any of the training, hadn't heard any of the warnings the rest of the group had been given about the dangers they would face. On the flight over he chatted, laughing and playful as if they were going to Myrtle Beach for spring break. Anna had been annoyed with him and half wished he would meet up with one of the fantastic creatures they had been told about just to give her some peace. She regretted this more than anybeast would ever know when he met his end. Anna didn't realize that she had started crying as she continued to walk along with Bane.

Sev was sound asleep in room 8 when he heard an alarm. "ALERT! ZOMBIE ATTACK! REPEAT,ZOMBIE ATTACK! ALL SOLDIERS REPORT TO YOUR STATIONS. REPEAT, ALL SOLDIERS REPORT TO YOUR STATIONS!" Sev came to full alert and grabbed his rifle from next to his bead, slung his bandolier over his shoulder, dressed at the speed of light, and dashed out into the hallway, almost running two beasts over. "Sorry sah, marm! Please excuse me!" he yelled as he dashed up the stairs and out the door. Once outside, Sev sprinted up the hill, caling on his radio "Sniper four on his way." he said, running flat out and throwing himself into his sniper's nest. "Sniper four in posistion." he informed the sniper command.

Huh? More zombies? The weasel thought as he saw the sniper rush to the perimeter from his room. He thought the sniper teams and such were in the barracks. Maybe they were full...
Bane wisely stepped aside, looking to see if Anna was run over or not. But, in doing so, he saw her tears. He hadn't noticed for a few steps, as he was looking straight ahead. "You okay, Anna?" He asked, concerned, stepping towards her a half-pace. The action was somewhat cautious, as he had no idea how she would react...

Sev turned his radio on. "Dimitri, how many zombies are we talking here, sah? I can only see about twenty of them from where I am. Can I fire at will?" he said, targeting the first zombie.

A sigh on the radio. "We have some more from the same angle. Open fire, but take out the stragglers first. We'll say 'hi' to the rest." Dmitri, the other weasel, looked through night vision goggles, fitting a silencer to his rifle. He signalled for everybeast in his squad to do the same. He wondered if that new sniper was as good as he boasted...
He held up a paw for the countdown to break cover from right in front of the zombie herd.
He held up five claws. Four. Three. Two. One.
The squad leaped up or came around various hiding spots in a semi-circle, all wearing night vision, all with Obokan rifles. They opened fire immediately, arving into the front rank of zombies with a hail of bullets and the high-pitched near-silent Teep! sounds from the silencers.
