"I'd do the same for any of my hares. None of them deserve to die. But many that die deserve life. And many that live deserve death. But can you give it to them?" The question was rhetorical. Sev had heard it when he was very small from a very wise old hedgehog. It was good advice, and he spread it about as often as he could

Ally's brow furrowed at the question. It was too much for her to think about at the moment so she filed it away in her mind for another time. Now all that mattered was seeing Jeremy through to his recovery.
The healer arrived back at the bedside then with a cup containing the physic in one paw and a bowl of cold water and a cloth in the other. She set the bowl on the table near Ally and then instructed the haremaid to, "lift his head, Miss, so we can get this drink into 'im."
Ally did as she was told.

((I was seeing if you knew who the quote was from. Gandalf from LOTR))
Sev held Jeremy's shoulder in a vice-like grip, as though a strong paw could hold him in this world by sheer force of will and strength. Jeremy's mouth hung slightly open, which would allow the healer to feed him the physic, which, considering all the trouble he'd been, was a very good thing.

((huh, i'd forgotten that. i thought it sounded familiar though))
The healer slowly poured the medicine down the hare's throat. "This should not only reduce the fever but also lessen the pain some." It should she thought but as this was a fever associated with shock and not infection she was not entirely sure. And still her patient looked very pale. The blood loss was taking its toll and she was afraid she would have to resort to the transfusion she had never before attempted. She set down the cup on the table and turned to Ally. "Now Miss, take that cloth there, wet it in the water and bathe his face with it. That should also help to cool him down." She smiled encouragingly at the haremaid, and then she turned to Sev, "A word if you don't mind?" She motioned for him to come away from Ally and Jeremy so they could speak privately.

With a final squeeze to the lieutenant's shoulder, Sev stood straight up, then shook his head as he became slightly dizzy from standing up to fast. AFter he cleared his head, he followed the healer into a corner. "What is it ma'am? He will survive, won't he?" Sev was the one that had ordered the gates closed with Jeremy still outside, and he felt responsible for what had happened

"Oh if I have anything at all to say about it he will." She gave a quick smile confident in her own skill as a healer and then turned serious again. "The fact is though as you said when you brought him in, he's lost a lot of blood. He needs more of the stuff and I think I know away we can give it to him. I've never tried it before but I'm sure it will do his heart good to have more of the stuff to pump." She looked back at Ally who was now singing softly to the Lieutenant. "Do you think the gel would be upset by me attempting something so drastic?"

"It all depends on how drastic. I think she would understand if its the only way we can save him, then she will probably acquiesce and let you do it. If it comes down to it, I can get her brother to take her somewhere else and keep her there until you finished." he replied softly. His tone, even at such a low volume, showed what he thought of that idea

She continued to speak in a low voice to the Colonel while watching the haremaid. "Well, the thing is that the blood we give him has to come from some other beast, as much as I hate the idea of injuring another creature to perform the operation. It won't be pretty and well, I'm afraid that the maid will offer herself up for the donation. And," She looked back at Sev. "Do you really think she would leave his side for one moment no matter what we do or tell her?"
((hey is the badger in the infirmary or is he someplace else? He could probably carry her out if we couldn't get her to move any other way))

((I lost track of him some time ago, but my mouse Bryan is still there.))
"I won't let her offer. I'll do it myself. We'll set everything up and before she can ask, we can start taking my blood." Sev had no idea how that was going to work, but he thought it sounded good. He glanced around the infirmary. That black mouse he had picked up was lying in a bed not too far away from Jeremy's. "I take it he's doing well?" he asked, guestering to the wide-awake mouse, who had been watching for some time.

The otter's mind was on the hare so when another one of her patients was mentioned she actually had to look over to even remember who the Colonel was speaking of. "Oh yes he'll be fine. I'm more worried about the beast who shot him. Horrid thing to wound a creature on your own side," Then her mind flicked back to the task at paw. "If you're sure you want to do this thing then I'll get your part of it started over here. I don't think the maid has even glanced up at us the entire time we've been speaking. There's a good chance I could get what I need without her even realizing we've been gone."
But Ally had been listening intently to as much as she could make out of the conversation. Her eyesight may not be perfect but her hearing more than made up for the loss. She was curious as to what this procedure was that the healer had mentioned and she most certainly wasn't going to let the Colonel do something for the Lieutenant that she could do herself.

Sev nodded, but before going over to start the 'procedure', he went over to the mouse. "Hey Bryan. You doing all right?" he asked. The black mouse nodded. "It was more shock than anything. I should be okay by tomorrow morning." he said. Sev nodded in return, then went to the spot where the healer had indicated he should go so they could start the procedure

"Arm not alas sand, 'way south in the west, So star land a mat, there's where I love best, Sand not as alarm, lone seabirds do wing, And alas most ran, list' to me whilst I sing. I'll walk alongside you, my lost little one, We'll find the mountain Salamandastron." Ally sang softly. She knew the words of the old lullaby so well that it was easy to listen to the beasts talking across the room while they flowed so melodiously out of her mouth. Now that the healer and the colonel seemed so busy preparing for this procedure whatever it was, she took the chance to look up. She hadn't completely understood when she had overheard the healer say something about somebeast giving their blood for Jeremy. It sounded like some sort of sacrifice. But now when she saw the healer walking towards Sev with a bowl and a knife in her paws she couldn't help but let out a small scream.
The ottermaid spun around at the sound and nearly dropped the bowl and knife. That was it. There was no keeping it from her now. The look on the haremaid's face made her feel twice as guilty for what she was about to do: take the blood of a perfectly healthy creature.

Sev sensed her indecision and grabbed the bowl from her hands and drew his dirk, carving a long furrow into his arm without even flinching as he clenched his fist and the blood started flowing into the bowl, a steady flow. The Colonel watched the blood in an almost facinated state. it slowly wond down his arm until it dripped off his wrist and into the bowl. Bryan flinched involuntarily as the knife slid across the hare's arm.

It was quite amazing that Ally had been able to stay up on her footpaws for the entire bloody ordeal with Jeremy. She was generally very squeamish around blood and it was now the sight of the slow drip down the Colonel's arm that did her in. Her pretty green eyes rolled back into her head and she crumpled into the chair beside Jeremy's bed that Sev had supplied her with earlier.
The healer was also transfixed by the red flow for a few seconds. The thump of Ally landing in the chair woke her from the trance. She shot a look in that direction and seeing that the haremaid was in no immediate danger turned back to Sev. She grabbed at clean white bandage and took two steps towards him. "I think that's quite enough, thank you." She placed the bandage over the self inflicted cut and took the bowl carefully from him, setting it aside. "Hold pressure here," She put his own paw on top of the bandage. "and hold that arm above the level of your heart." She led him to raise the elbow of the injured arm.

Sev shrugged. It hadn't been bad at all. He applied pressure as instructed and kept the arm above his head. "It seems a good thing that she didn't offer to do it. She probably would have fainted when you had the knife anywhere near her." Sev wasn't mocking, only making an honest observation
