The unlucky stoats tried anything to stab and hack at their opponent. The one whose arm the mongoose was twisting howled in pain, and the other stoat grimaced and dropped his dagger as the mongoose's own weapon cut into his forehead. The wounded stoat managed to save himself by grasping the mongoose's wrist and pushing upwards. The sweat beaded on the foreheads of the vermin who were trying to keep themseles alive. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Shardear and the weasel Fridga raced hap hazardly through the woods, not caring if their footfalls tossed up heaps of dead leaves and loam. Suddenly Shard tripped on something alive in her path. Before she could stand up there was a bloodcurdling scream.
It was the weasel who had screamed, and once the pine marten had scrambled to her feet the reason became apparent. The screeching vermin was being clasped tightly in the jaws of a fair-sized grass snake, a native and non-venomous constrictor. The creature had squeezed the life out of the weasel with just its jaws; Shardear did not want to imagine what it could do with its coils. The snake noticed her and approached with a loud, angry hiss.

The mongoose looked at both of his victims with that glare. Should he really just kill them? They may be more braver than the other beasts the he had to deal with before them but still they were both cowards. A thought it him and so did the sound of the hissing and scream. He could not retrieve all of his throwing weapons and get to the snake in time. Also the search would be far tedious for him to look for them. Also now it seemed to have found some unlucky creatures to eat. But by the time he founds everything and came for it. It might be long gone. Maybe these...... "Stoat Brothers" could lend a paw?
With both his arms. He threw both of them to the ground. Talking in a mean tone. "Alright Stoat Brothers. Now you better listen here. I could kill you two easily. But your lucky there is a snake about and I got to be slaying it. You guys are going to go find my Chakrams and as for that one fox that i dropped. Go see if he is alright. I don't think Three wounds to the torso with those things killed him, If he is still alive. Rip off some clothing for bandages. If not. Just pull those out of him. When you found them all. Come looking for me. But be warned. If you try using them on me. You'll find out why you should be fearing my blades more than some fool's voice!"
He put his curved dagger into his sash and picked up the Spetum and ran off into the woods. Following the sounds of hissing. Homing in on it. Hopefully those stoats fear his blades and speed far more now than any leader's wrath. Because they should...

The stoats looked at each other somewhat stupidly. It had never crossed their minds before to desert from Shardear's gang or even so much as give their leader a dirty look.
"Er...H'wodd d'we do now?"
"I tink we lissen to de mongoose."
"Right... Shar'ear gone now; we fin' de mongoose's rings."
The two stoats scrambled around, sifting through the sand and constantly cutting themselves on the razor-sharp edges. They had found that the fox was still in decent condition and had stood him upright after removing the chakrams("EEEEYYAAA!"). They paused, confused for a moment now that they did not have a leader to command them, then one of the stoats spotted him entering the woods with the Spetum held out in front. Tentatively they followed him.
-------------------------------------------------------------- Shardear was more scared than she had ever been in her entire life, well except for when---she closed the thought like somebeast would slam a door. The grass snake reared up high and glared at her angrily. Her unkept toeclaws might have actually done some damage to the snake, and now the serpent thought of her as an aggressor. The pine marten took a few slow steps back, remembering not to make any sudden movements.
The snake's tounge flickered in and out as it decided how dangerous the lone vermin was, but apparently it had scented something far more dangerous; it turned to face the desert and Shardear swore she saw its eyes widen. She became more confident as the threat to her safety was focused elsewhere. She grabbed her spear from where it had fallen and contemplated skewering the snake from behind, but decided against it. The serpent would probably just whip around and kill her if she did that.

Shatrunjay stopped a few feet from the snake. That angry frown and that cruel glare had not even left his face as he roared out his challenge to the scaled beast. "I am Shatrunjay you scaled scum! A Mongoose! A killer of your kings and queens! Your filthy disgraceful race has been cowards and have fled after giving your poisonous bites or wrapped your coils around us and squeezing the life out of our breaths! Back biting coward! Just like so long ago in our history of rivalry and hate! Come so i may KILL you Serpent! So i may have another monster to fight in Hellgates for eternity!"
Unlike most vermin. Mongooses were almost never cowardly. Almost never weak. And certainly almost all had slain a snake. Infact. Cowardly, Disabled or weak Mongooses were often picked on and even killed for being disgraceful and for being unable to kill.
Mongooses were some of the more braver, more cunning, more faster and more violent of the vermin. Often fighting to the death without a single beg for mercy. Because being killed only sends them to the Hellgates. Were they fight their hated enemies. The Snakes. Forever! Something they always look forward too...

The stoat brothers came to a sudden halt as they rounded the first wave of trees and saw the snake and mongoose about to do battle. The fox did not see them stop and plowed into them, knocking them all over.
Shardear watched with a scowl. Her own minions had changed sides! If they ever wanted to see their skins again they had better try to kill that mongoose, or the pine marten's favorite dagger would easily do the trick. She didn't care about the snake, she didn't care about the stoats or fox, all she wanted was for some way to put a blade between the mongoose's ribs. Now that she thought about it, she did care about the snake. It would do for a good distraction while she formulated a plan...
The grass snake was terrified by the prospect of fighting a mongoose, but Shatrunjay's remark about serpents being "back biting cowards" had stung him. The serpent knew that mongoose's don't back down ever, so a display of aggression and a stern warning would be a waste of time and energy. The large constrictor bunched himself up and launched himself bodily at the mongoose in a headbutt-like strike.

The mongoose was very quick with his own attack. He flung the polearm at the serpent and leaped to the side to avoid the snakes sudden charge. Ripping claw marks into the ground as he skid to a stop on all fours. He quickly got up and pulled the Curved dagger out with his left paw and unbound the mace and chain from about his neck and shoulders with the other. The ball had no spikes on it so there was no fear of being cut, though it was too risky to use with his scimitar. There was a good change he might accidentally strike his blade with the ball and snap the sword in two. The mace and chain is a very powerful but difficult weapon to wield effectively. His curved dagger was short enough to use along with it though.

The snake was also quick. In the blink of an eye he changed his course and avoided the Spetum. Letting vent to an angry hiss, the serpent lashed at the mongoose with his heavy tail, hoping to trip his opponent.
---------------------------------------------------- The disfigured pine marten had taken her leave and circled around the fight, heading back to the scrublands where her camp was located. On the way she met one of her pine marten bandits, the one who had dodged the mongoose's chakrams and played dead. Shardear did not speak to him, she only motioned for him to follow her. She entered the camp with a frustrated look on her scarred face. A grisled grey-furred ferret sat hunched on a rock near the fire ring, his piked halberd pointed warningly at a small harvest mouse beside him.
"Weeell..." Shardear said nastily, sneering at the ferret."Too old and lazy to come join in the fighting, eh?" The ferret gulped nervously and tried to smile as he answered.
"Well, er... I had to, uh, guard this worthless beast, ain't that right Snurlubb?"
A woodrat peeked out of a tent nearby and nodded enthusiasticly. The old ferret hoped that this would be enough for Shardear, but mentally he wagered that it wasn't.

Shatrunjay made a leap too late was the snake's tail smacked his footpaws, causing him to fall on his stomach. But he was very quick to recover, leaping onto his feet already. He leaped at the snake's head with a downward stab of his curved dagger. It was a surprising leap for any vermin to accomplish. But he had leaped from the ground and right full in the face of the snake!

The serpent was very blessed to have fast reflexes and sharp eyes, for when he saw the curved blade speeding toward his head like a falcon in the dive, he jerked his head forward, toward his opponent. The knife missed his head but buried itself in where the snake's shoulder would be if snakes had limbs. The pain and the anger towards the mongoose's unprovoked attack made him cry out: "Essessar faisss zherssa!"; a serpentine insult that would make any other snake blush.
---------------------------------------------------------- Shardear kicked the ancient ferret half-heartedly and glared at her bowrat. "Who asked yew?!?" Snurlubb the rat quivered and opened his mouth to answer, but his leader silenced him before he could begin. "Speakin' of the half-witted divvil, where's Deddun?" She bore a glare into the ferret's skull with her remaining eye. The ferret prodded the mouse he was guarding to make him stand up taller. Shardear only glanced at the mouse slave in passing, then she roared out a string of orders.
"Pack up, yew slime! Roll up those tents! Getcher weapons! We're goin' after that mongoose." The remaining beasts under her command; a ferret, a rat, a weasel, a fox, and another pine marten, hurried to obey. Their malicious leader would not hesitate to unleash her wrath on them.

The Mongoose Seemed to not understand the insult. The snake's words were like the wind. They did not matter anymore. The mongoose was seeming to transform before any beasts eyes. Becoming even angrier and angrier. The hairs on his neck and back stood out, His ears seemed to be pinned to his head, His angry frown was now a almost rabid-like snarl, The lethal fangs and teeth showing. He hated snakes. Despised them. Their ugly faces, Their disgusting stare, their horrible fangs and their bite, The way they moved was sickening! He hated the snake now! He was going to KILL him even if he had to die with it! The raging beast lunged forward with a hateful roar and swung the mace and chain as swiftly and lethally as he can.

The grass snake panted wildly, having lost a lot of blood from his dagger-wound. His mind raced for answers to his dilemna, wondering why the mongoose had attacked him in the first place: Was it mistaken identity? Was this powerful fighter mentally scarred? Did he simply have an irrational hatred of serpent-kind due to some rivalry long ago; one that no beast involved remembers the reason for? Grudges would be the way for mongooses, as the snake recalled. It may not matter what he thought, for the mongoose had raised his cruel mace and chain for a killing blow. The serpent released a breathy, silibant sigh and did not even try to dodge. With a sickening crunch the life of yet another serpent ended.
The stoats, though both possessing a phobia of snakes, were shocked at the sigh of a creature's head being there, and then in a single motion it being nothing but skull fragments, blood, and gore. They made very un-male-like squeals and fell backwards over a clump of bushes, clutching each other. The fox just stood stunned, but seemed more composed around corpses. He strode forward, picking his way around the dead snake, and addressed the mongoose carefully.
"Well there, comrade, a job well done, eh?"
--------------------------------------------------------- Shardear snuffled the air through her scar-twisted nose, grinning with anticipation. They had found the trail and the scent! There was no mistaking the scent of mongoose; they smelled a little like blood, a little like sweat, and just a bit like the metallic stench of battle. She picked up her pace, not waiting for the heavily-laden vermin following her.

The mongoose looked at the fox and simply nodded. Than go to work. Ripping the dead snake's teeth out one by one. Dangling from his neck were about ten or so necklaces of snake fangs and teeth. Almost like trophies and proof of his kills in a way. It's almost like headhunting. A Practice often done by savages or tribes beasts. The whole operation cause more blood to flow and the nasty ripping sounds would make most beasts feel uneasy. Yet the mongoose acted like it was a daily job or something...

The fox jerked one paw up and turned away to avoid a spurt of snake blood as the mongoose ripped yet another needle-shaped tooth out of the crushed ruins of the serpent's head. "Err..." The red fox was slightly disturbed by the snake-killer's practiced casualness with the horrifying ritual. "Well, I, umm... I don't want to waste any of your time, but, ehh... can I ask you a teeny little question...?" The two stoats, still clinging to each other, leapt up and tried to protest, but the fox shushed them immediately.
------------------------------------------------------ The ancient ferret, a bulky weasel, and the rat archer Snurlubb had caught up with the imfamous Shardear Bluddtip, despite being forced to tote the canvas from their tents around plus all their food and water supplies. The pine marten looked over her shoulder balefully at their pitiful efforts. Weak!, she thought bitterly, Worms and crowbait! They'd better not be so worthless when we're caught up with the blasted mongoose... The pine marten kept her eyes on the sandy tracks that her speedy target had left and strode ahead, emboldened by the small vermin pack behind her.

The Mongoose turned his attention away from his objective of removing the snake's teeth and looked at the fox. What was his question to a creature like me? He thought. This creature used to be his enemy for a few minutes. Now returning as what seems to be a ally along with the stoat brothers. The Mongoose finally spoke. "What is it you wish to tell me Fox?" The Mongoose was surprised he did not tell them to shut the heck up and go away. But he really wished to hear what the fox had to say for some odd reason. As if destiny had pulled him and these four creatures near for a reason...
