Tamar put the dagger back in her pocket and looked expectantly up at him when he started to speak. She smiled at his inability to form words, not laughing at him just recognizing that he was having the same difficultly that she was. She trembled a little in the cold air.

Silas seemed to notice the tremble, and said, "Here..." He gestured with a paw for Tamar to come closer around the fire as he was, a silent invitation for her to stand by him. It was certainly a cold night out, but he didn't mind it as much now. Especially with Tamar around.

Tamar stepped closer to the fire and to Silas. She smiled. He had either read her mind to know she was cold or else he had simply wanted her nearer. Either way, Tamar was glad of his offer. She held her paws out to the small blaze to warm them realizing how cold they were now that Silas was not holding them. She tried to strike up a conversation. "So what are you going to be teaching everybeast? I'm sure you know lots of things that would be helpful for us all to know. . . er to defend the Abbey, that is."

"Ah, well, some archery and slinging," He informed her, glad to have something to talk about. He looked back into the fire for a second in thought. "Probably fighting with a quarterstaff, and some paw-to-paw as well. Last time I checked, we don't have enough swords to go around, though..." He patted the hilt of his own sword beneath his cloak. He felt as if he was saying a bit too much about all this, but there was so much to do. And so little time to fit everything in. He looks back towards Tamar.

She'd been watching him, listening intently while he spoke. She smiled when he turned to look at her. He was so knowledgeable about all this, just like her grandfather who was once the champion of Redwall. She wondered why Silas hadn't been chosen as champion. "It's a shame Bark took the Sword of Martin on his quest to Salamandastron. It probably would have come in useful. But then I guess the sword has been away from the Abbey at other times when danger has come and our creatures have always met the challenge." Tamar had done a lot of reading about the abbey's history. She was particularly fond of the stories about Song Swifteye and Triss the swordmaid. They were the kind of squirrelmaids a girl could look up to. When she spoke again Tamar found she had to look away from Silas, "I'm glad this time around we have you here to help us get ready."

"Yeah, well, I'll do what I can." He says somewhat modestly. Turning back to the fire, he prodded and stirred it some with a stick, creating sparks as well as a rush of warmth from the dying embers. He sighs, letting out a puff of halfway-condensed air. "I never liked preparing for war, though..." He commented. Unconsciously looking at Tamar again, he let the fire's newfound heat soak through him.

"Oh, no, of course not." She answered quickly, "Nobeast wants a war. I just meant. . . I don't know. . ." because you're so strong, so smart, so brave. She thought all of these things but not a one of them came out of her mouth. Unconsciously Tamar's paw went to her throat where the Marlfox had pressed the dirk. "Sometimes we have to fight to defend our way of life and," she looked into Silas's eyes, "those we love."

Silas nodded minutely, knowing this to be true. "Hopefully we won't have to..." He said, looking back into her eyes ((What color, anyway?)), finding, or rather somehow sensing something more behind her words through her gaze. "...To, uh, fight, that is." He explained after a few moments, in a slightly hushed tone.

((I was debating between brown and green. Shall we call it a truce and say they're hazel?)) "Hopefully," she echoed him again. Tamar was feeling very hopeful at the moment, about a thousand things, not the least of these things being that Silas had some kind of feelings for her. "Silas," she said his name softly. She wanted to say more but nothing seemed right, so she just let the name hang on the air and looked into his blue eyes.

"Yes, Tamar?" Silas responds after another few moments, his voice spoken in the same tone. He also felt like there was something to say, something to do, so he stepped closer, merely because he wanted to do so. No, it was different than just a 'fleeting fancy'. It bordered on a need. He looked back into Tamar's eyes, that feeling entering his mind, broadcast through his own eyes. He found himself unconsciously reaching for her paw to grip it comfortingly, awaiting her next words.

Standing there close to him, looking into his eyes, feeling him holding her paw, she could think of only one thing. Then the words were out of her mouth before she could stop them, "Hold me." The words were spoken so softly he never would have been able to hear them if he wasn't already standing so close to her, but she was compelled to say them. It was as if she had never wanted or needed anything more in all her seasons. It was as if her whole life had led up to this moment and nothing afterwards mattered.

Silas appeared to be in some sort of a daze as well, though certainly not an ignorant one. Leastways, not to Tamar. Once again, he did not hesitate. "Certainly..." he inched forward, "...Tamar." Then, slowly it seemed, as if in a trance yet not so, he brought both arms around Tamar's back, and kissed her for the second time that day. But this time around, he did it with feeling. With passion. With love.

Tamar also wrapped her arms around him. She returned his kiss willingly with a passion equal to his own. She loved him. She did, she knew that now. When they finally broke the kiss, she laid her head on his shoulder. "Silas," she asked, "What's happening to us?"

Silas, still embracing her, wasn't exactly sure how to answer that question. Feeling the gentle weight of her head on his shoulder, he replied, "I... I dunno..." And he spoke thruthfully. He never really felt this way before in his life. But no matter what the feeeling was comprised of, it made him feel whole, as if he stumbled through life to come across this squirrelmaid, and all along they were meant to meet.

Tamar smiled and gave a little laugh. "Whatever it is, I like it." She was slightly embarrassed by the admonition and she buried her face in his cloak. But if she wasn't mistaken by the way he had kissed her, he was enjoying this every bit as much as she was. "Silas." She said his name again. Not because she wanted anything just because that name was so inexorably connected with everything she wanted in the world.
