Continuation from Early Risers.
Throughout the day, Silas had only caught passing glimpses of Tamar, as he was busy readying the abbey's defenses, crafting archery targets, gathering slingstone pebbles, taking weapons inventory, etc, etc...
It was only after a rather late dinner that he was able to stop working. He went up to the walltops to stand watch for some of the night, to 'Think for a bit...' And so he stood, leaning upon the ramparts, a small fire in a big elevated metal bowl nearby to prevent the walls from being scarred by ashes. A small stool was set out for the warrior to ease the weight off of his injured leg, but he needed it no more. He could stand. Leaning on his elbows, which in turn pressed against the wall, he gazes up at the starry sky, the flames flickering behind him, giving warmth to him in the chilly night.
"Hmmm..." He pondered aloud, taking in the absolute silence around him. it had been a long day...

Tamar who had run out of the Great Hall that morning right into the herd of excited dibbuns had been drafted by Lois Badgermum to help out with them. Playing in the snow with them had helped to get her mind off everything that had happened. Parts of it she very much wanted to forget, like yelling at her best friend who happened to be the Abbess of Redwall. But there were other things that happened that morning that she would be glad to remember for the rest of her life. Many of those having to do with a certain Warrior Squirrel. She had only just gotten away from the dibbuns having helped with their lunch, tea, supper, bath, and bedtime. She was exhausted and hot from all that running around. That was why she had decided to take a little stroll outside. The night was so clear now that the snow clouds had passed and the air was so crisp and cold. She pulled the warm wool shawl around her shoulders as she climbed the wall steps. It was hard to believe that just this morning she had come up here and seen or rather heard Silas arrive back from his little adventure in the wood. She smiled to herself now allowing her thoughts of him to run freely through her mind.

At that same time, not more than eight paces away, Silas was thinking of Tamar, mostly of the rather awkward event in the Great Hall. He also thought back a few days, when he left the Abbey. Hearing the crunch of snow on the wallsteps made him look back from the sky. In the dark he could discern a figure, getting closer to reveal herself as Tamar as the firelight cast its meager glow upon her. She seemed to be daydreaming about something, like he was a second before...
"Uh, hi..." He said after a moment or two, breaking the silence and waving his paw in greeting. The squirrel was mildly surprised to see Tamar appear on the walltops.

Startled, it took Tamar a moment to realize who it was that had hailed her. "I'm sorry. I didn't realize anybeast else was up here." Then she looked at him and smiled shyly. "Silas," she said his name softly. "I've been wrangling dibbuns all day. I needed a breath of fresh air." She added by way of explanation of why she was there. "I suppose you have sentry duty tonight. It is a beautiful night, isn't it?" She looked away from him and up into the clear velvety black sky that was full of stars.

Silas gave her a thin smile, and also looked up again into the sky. "Yeah." He agreed with the squirrelmaid in a slightly hushed tone, probably to preserve the silence. The moon was behind them, a quarter full yet stil managing to throw its light over the Abbey. He could name most of the stars up there...
Exhaling a bit, he turned to look back at Tamar after a minute or so. "Um, Tamar..." He spoke up, understandably a bit hesitant. "A...About this morning..." He had been meaning to talk with her about it sometime, so now was as good as any.

"I'm sorry I ran off like that," she interrupted him as soon as he brought up the subject and then she hurried on. "It wasn't as if I didn't like it. . . because. . . I did. I mean I thought it was very nice. . . what you did . . . and," she chanced a look over at him and considered saying that she wouldn't mind if he did it again but she caught herself looking back down at her paws. ". . . and Saol had no right to make you do something you didn't want to do."

Silas found himself listening intently to the squirrelmaid's lengthy explanation, and replied as it was finished, "Uh-huh." Silas nodded at the last statement, though he would say that he 'kinda wanted to' do it anyways. Just not in front of everyone. "Yeah... She was steppin' over the line a bit there." He commented, attempting to justify Tamar yelling at Saol, which wasn't an easy thing to do in the least. They were friends, after all.

"Well, she did apologize, later." Tamar admitted. "Said she didn't mean any harm." Quietly she continued, "I told her I was sorry too for the bit about chucking her out and getting a new abbess." She had no doubt that he had heard the comment and as much as she hated admitting her own guilt she wanted him to know that she didn't hold a grudge. Then suddenly she remembered something and she turned to him. "Your leg, is it alright now?"

Silas looked down at the injury in question. "For the most part." He said, setting his weight on it experimentally. "Unless someone hits me there with a staff or something, I should be fine." he reassured her. "Just in time, too. I'm gonna start trainin' everyone tomorrow..." A few seconds passed here. "Uh, d'you still have that dagger, Tamar?" he inquired, now directly facing her.

"What?" Tamar had completely forgotten the gift that the other squirrelmaid had given her. She reached down and felt in her apron pocket. It was still there, so she drew it out. "This one, you mean?" She held it rather awkwardly being unfamiliar with weapons of any sort.

"Yeah." He walked over to examine the blade. It was a well-crafted one, from what he could tell, a good grip and hilt... "I think you asked me to teach you a few things about it..." He stated, connecting it to the training tomorrow. "Maybe if I put Tom on archery duty for awhile, I could..." he said, now looking up into her eyes, seeing how his offer was recieved but mainly because, well, she was Tamar. And he knew he liked her.

Tamar was taken in by his eyes again and she hoped the words that came out of her mouth made sense. "I did ask that. Yes, I would like for you to teach me. If it's not too much trouble." She was glad of course that she would be learning to defend herself and the abbey but mostly she was just glad to have another chance to spend time with him. She smiled and reached to take the dagger back from him but instead of finding the hilt her paw found his.

Silas felt her paw on his, and glanced down at it for a second before returning his gaze as well as a thin smile of his own. "...'Course not..." He said in reply. After another such moment of hesitation, he set the dagger gently in her paw. He then gripped her paw andthe dagger in both of his own, all the while looking at her. He then remembered to open his mouth and speak. "Just, uh, just keep it in a safe place..."

"a safe place. . ." she repeated. She couldn't help but think that she herself was in the safest place she could possibly be in standing there next to him with his paws holding hers. She dropped her eyes to his paws smiling. "Thank you."

"Uh, no problem." Silas responds, unsure of what to do next. After a short while, he lets go of Tamar's paw to let her take the dagger. The action was met with some reluctance from the warrior, which really wasn't a surprise. "So, uh..." He says after a moment, attempting to start a conversation while still looking at the squirrelmaid but losing his tongue. That was a surprise.
OOC: If you noticed, he never stutters or anything to otherbeasts at all.
