Drask wanted to laugh along with Penny's mom, but when Penny demanded the cell phone back, he handed it to her, the laughter dying from his eyes. The ferret now regretted picking up the phone, so far it wasn't the great joke he thought it would be, next time, he knew he was going to leave Penny to answer her own calls.

"Well," Penny's voice rose as she spoke to her mother, "What if I did go to Alaska? . . . Nope I probably wouldn't bring a single book with me because I don't have any they've all been sent home to you with the rest of my stuff. . . And no I wouldn't do that either. . . . Fine maybe I will. . . ." She frowned and anyone who knew her well would guess that even in her huff her practical mind was working out the details "Of course I don't have the right clothes for Alaska. I just brought one extra outfit in case there was some delay with my flight to Phoenix. . . . No I have everything else I need It's not like it's out of the country and I would need my passport or anything. . . ." She listened for a couple of minutes and then concluded. "Then I guess I won't be seeing you tomorrow. Yes, I love you too. Bye." She pushed the button to hang up the phone and then the realization of what she had told her mother dawned on her. She looked up at Drask eyes wide with disbelief of what she had just done.

Drask's eyes widened even more so, what the heck just happened? Was his mind playing tricks on him? Or did he get some kind of sickness from the Congo? Drask knew neither one was true, and he didn't have a word to say in protest at that moment. He was completely and utterly surprised. After was seemed like an eternity he spoke up, "Penny, you can't go to Alaska with me. It's dangerous up there, and besides that you aren't prepared to go, you have nothing for hiking, no heavy jacket, nothing that you need for Alaska....." Drask forced himself to stop, he didn't want to sound harsh, he was concerned for Penny, he would have never in a million years pictured her on one of his journeys.

Penny was flustered and she began to babble. "Well I didn't really intend . . . she practically forced it on me . . . I can't really take it back now." Penny knew her mother would expect her to call right back and say that it was all a joke but she was suddenly feeling stubborn and independent. She would go to Alaska if for no other reason than to prove her mother wrong. "I can get what I need when we get there."

Drask knew there was no changing Penny's mind, now that it was set on coming to Alaska with him, but he would try. "I know you can get what you need once you get there, it's just not safe, you don't have enough field experience to just drop into the wilds of Alaska. It's nothing like hiking through Washington," Drask felt strongly about his opinion, but he knew Penny well enough that she wouldn't change her mind, no matter what he did or said.

Penny knew he was right but she didn't want to admit it. Instead she turned away from him, fluffed up one of the couch pillows and laid her head down on it. "I guess we'll need to get some rest tonight then. The airport is likely to be a zoo, and I'll need to transfer my ticket."

Drask stared at her for a moment longer, before lowering his eyes and shaking his head. It looked like Penny was going to Alaska with him, and there was no changing that. Without another word he laid the bag of chips back in Penny's bag, he was going to go to his room at that moment, but he decided to wait just a second. "Good Night, Penny."

Penny was thinking again about what she had seen in the news footage. It was going to be a dangerous trip and for all her book knowledge she was very green when it came to field experience. She almost wished she could take it back: just go home to Phoenix and forget the whole thing but she was too stubborn to call her mother now and tell her she had changed her mind. Her mind in turmoil she nearly missed the fact that Drask had spoken to her. She looked at him a bit startled, "What . . . oh yeah, good night, and um. . . thanks for letting me stay here."

Kal packed up his snowmobile. All the stuff he needed to run over to the airport and back was there. Rifle, knife, snowshoes, and extra gas. Kal climbed on the back and started it. The roar shattered the peaceful night. It would take at least three hours to get to the airport. Kal sped off across the frozen waste, towards the airport.

"You're welcome." Drask turned away after that and walked back down the small hallway back to his room. It had the same organized look as the other parts of his apartment, with a bed against one wall, a large dresser against another, and a smallish closet. Drask's bedroom was basically blank, except for side of the dresser, which was covered with various pictures he had taken in different locations, as well as the ones from the Mt. Saint Helens trip. He looked at the pictures for a few minutes before getting ready for bed. Five minutes later he sat down on the edge of the bed, he would pack everything in the morning, right now he needed to take a break. Drask wasn't hungry anymore, but he couldn't go to sleep just yet, he got up walked over to the closet and dug through a stack of books. He found the leather-bound journal like book that he kept records of his travels. Drask read through the book, this particular entry was about the trip to Saint Helens. It was among his favorite.

Penny curled up on the couch and tried to sleep but sleep wouldn't come. After a while she sat up and looked around the room. Her eyes fell again on the pictures by Drask's desk and she got up to have a closer look at them. Her attention was again drawn to the picture of herself at the super bowl party. She remembered it now that Drask had said something and the memory made her smile again. The costume had been funny but that hadn't been the only reason for her grin. It had been something Drask had said. . . As she thought she reached to take the picture from it's place and as she did her elbow brushed one of the other frames on the desk knocking it to the floor and shattering the glass. "Blast it all!" she cursed and then knowing that Drask would have heard the crash from the other room she called out so he wouldn't worry. "It's alright. I'm not hurt and I'll clean it up." She bent down setting down her own portrait and began to pick up the larger pieces of glass being careful not to cut her paws on the sharp edges.

Drask was not expecting any sudden noise, and he dropped his book on the floor. He heard Penny say she was alright, but it apparently she broke something, he found he was more concerned about Penny than about whatever was shattered. Drask quickly stood and came out of his bedroom, wearing a Seahawks shirt and still his blue jeans. He wasn't sure how to react when he entered the room, catching sight of Penny picking up shards of glass. But he made for the kitchen, and searched around for a moment, he didn't know where anything was in his own apartment, but he finally found an old broom. Drask silently swept up the remnants of the glass.

"I'm so sorry. . . . I didn't mean to . . . I was only trying to . . ." Penny babbled, her paws still holding the larger shards of glass. She looked around for a trash can to dispose of them and didn't see anything and in her agitation squeezed them a little too tight causing a small cut in the pad of one paw. "Ah!" she called out at the pain and looked down to see the red spreading over the smooth surface of the offending object.

"It's alright. It was just a picture frame." Drask didn't have anything else to say, it didn't matter to him that a picture frame was shattered, he had broken several. But he hated to see Penny so distraught over breaking it, and he noticed that she clamped down on a shard of the glass in her paw. Drask wasn't sure of what to do for a short moment, "Are you okay? Do you need something for that cut?" That was the best he could offer at that time, hopefully the concern wasn't too obvious in his voice.

Penny didn't look up at him. She had noted the concern in his voice but she didn't want to embarrass him. It was enough to know that he cared. "No it'll be alright. It's not deep. I just need to run it under some cold water." She headed towards the kitchen still looking for a trashcan to dispose of the broken glass.
