A pause prolonged the slightly awkward air that seemed to appear as Tamar made her apology. Regardless, a vole, interested in the Marlfoxes, told them, "I'll get the book, miss." The rest of the group then murmured quietly amongst themselves as they waited, bits and pieces of conversation emphasized.
"..Marlfox in the abbey?..." "...Doesn't seem possible that..." "....What next? Murder?..."
Upon the vole's return with the book (Which was only half a minute at best), everyone quieted as he offered it to the squirrelmaid. Everyone, once again, had their full attention directed towards Tamar.

Saol, grabbed the book before Tamar could take it, "Oi oughter lock you'm back in ee gatehouse fur disrespect." But the molemaid couldn't stay mad at her best friend for long especially since it seemed she was the only witness to the crime that had taken place. "Naow, first thing needs be sed, Marfoxes bain't magic." She flipped through the book with her digging claws looking for the right page.

The crowd hushed once more, awaiting the word of the Abbess as if it were story time. And it probably was, for most of the dibbuns, some perched upon shoulders of the other members of the group. They all wanted answers to their questions.

((I wouldn't be apposed to encountering a fox before my character enters the abbey proper))
Trill watched with an impassive gaze from a tree as a flurry of activity consumed the abbey she had been seeking for better part of three seasons. She gave the great red buildings only a cursory glance, her business was with its dwellers. Even so she could see why it had baffled so many invaders for so long.
Cautiously she moved back to wait and watch for a calmer moment to approach. The strength of the abbeys walls and the kindness of those who dwelled with in them was legendary but she wasn't going to risk her skin on legends. They would calm down soon enough and she was a patient beast if nothing else. Besides she had no reason to rush now that her goal was in sight.

Saol found the page she was looking for and handed the book to Tamar, "You read bedder 'em me, ho urr."
Tamar looked at the page. She read the passage to herself and then paraphrased. "There were 6 marlfoxes that came to the Abbey in Abbess Song's time. They stole the tapestry of Martin and Song and her friends followed one of the beasts back to their island in the middle of a big inland lake. They got the tapestry and freed the slaves that served the Marlfox queen on the island. She says here that all the marlfoxes were killed."

OOC: Hmmm...
The crowd murmured again as the information was spoken, most having their doubts about all of the Marlfoxes being killed. Most were angry at the particualr Marlfox that had seen fit to rob them with condescending impunity.
"...All of 'em?" "...Then who was..." "...Can't be a fake..."

" 'Ey there!" That same shrew called up to Trill, just noticing her. " 'Ave you seen a Marlfox about?"
OOC: Might give this thread a time-lapse just for the heck of it..

OOC: Ah. Just a moment...
One of the more inquisitive bunch, a vole, raised a paw, struggling to be seen amidst the tall beasts. "Miss Tamar?" He called out. "Do you think you can show us what happened out there? Maybe a clue'll be there..."

"Well, yes, I supposed that is if . . ." Tamar looked to Saol for her approval.
The mother abbess nodded.
Tamar shut the old book. It sent up a cloud of dust and she sneezed. "If you'll all just follow me then." Tamar led them back out to the grounds and across to the steps. "I helped bake the bread this morning and then I came up here to see if . . . anybeast . . . was coming down the path." she exchanged a significant look with Saol.
The molemaid knew full well her friend had gone to see if Silas was coming back from his journey yet.
"Anyway, I had just decided to go back in when the foul beast came up behind me and put a knife to my throat." Tamar stood on the steps where she had been when the event took place and held her paws to her throat.

Trill looked down at the shrew for a long moment without blinking. She was not trying to seem strange or mysterious though, just consumed by her thoughts. She had no particular idea what a marl fox was, outside of what the 'fox' in its name implied, but took the time to make certain before answering.
"No..." She said, still looking at the shrew a little too intently as she tried to make her mind up about her course of action. She hadn't expected any beast to approach her.
"Can I go in?" She added after a moment, not wanting to be caught out with a strange fox of any kind lurking about. Especially one that seemed bent on some sort of mischief, if the abbey dwellers agitation was any indication.

The shrew seemed disappointed at Trill for not observing the Marlfox leave the abbey, but he was expecting way too much from her. What he should be doing is searching for a trail. He nodded as Trill asked for entry into the abbey. "Go right ahead, miss. We'd be glad to meet ye." he then inclined his head in parting, and moved off to find that trail.
Meanwhile, on the walltops, the abbeybeasts were listening intently to the squirrelmaid, most observing where she stood as the fox put a knife to her throat, while the vole who initially asked to go out and see what happened, was examining the trees. There was one branch in particular that almost met the wall, but fell short two paces. Maybe the fox had climbed up the tree...
"Wat'd y' do next, miss Tammie?" A wide-eyed dibbun asked from his perch upon an otter's head, making the beast below him flinch as he moved, for the dibbun himself was a hedgehog.

Trill watched the shrew cast about, seemingly looking for something. It was not hard to imagine that he was looking for a trail given the question he had posed her. She said nothing though she could see a large set of paw prints from her perch high above him. Her grasp of the situation was limited and though she was reluctant to meet the fox she did not yet have a reason to actively help in finding him.
Rather then go to the gate and knock Trill elected to move along a stand of trees that grew close to the abbey wall. A good number of beast were gathered there who did not look like guards so it seemed like the fastest way to get someone’s attention.
"Hello." She called as she came cautiously to rest on a branch clearly with there view.

Tamar gave a little shriek at the sound of the other squirrelmaid's hail. The newcomer was balanced on the exact branch Silas had been sitting on when he had said his last good bye to her. It was the branch she assumed the fox had jumped from when he came over the wall and put his dagger to her throat. "Who are you?" Tamar asked defensively.
Saol shouted up from the abbey grounds below. "Wot's goin' on, Tamer?" The molemaid had elected to stay off the battlements because of her typical moleish fear of heights.

It was not that Trill didn't know what it was to be surprised but the other squirrel maids rather dramatic reaction put her immediately on the defensive and for her that meant in running mode. With a small hop she was on a branch several feet behind her that offered more in the way of shelter if anyone decided to take a shot at her. The question however halted her from running off completely for the moment.
"Trill, a stranger." She said, trying to be efficient with her response. The abbey seemed large enough that she might have gotten away with a lie about knowing someone in it but she wasn’t in the habit of doing the amount of talking required to tell such a falsehood. The truth was simpler and usually safer.

"It's only a squirrel," Tamar called down to the Abbess once she realized the fact for herself. Then she turned back to the stranger who called herself Trill. "Sorry about that. You startled me. Er . . . what brings you to Redwall?" She knew every good creature was to be welcomed into the Abbey walls but after the morning she'd had she wanted to be doubly sure that this was a good creature.
