It was twenty minutes since the takeoff from Sea-Tac Airport, on the round trip flight to Anchorage, Alaska. The plane was far larger than any of the others Drask had flown in, but of course must of the planes he had the misfortune of flying in were old two prop Cessnas that looked like they had came straight out of a junkyard. Drask didn't pay much attention to the plane after his initial glance around. The ferret leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes, he needed to get some sleep after such a busy few days, and he dozed off lightly.
Luck wasn't on his side, however. He felt somebeast flick his ear, and he quickly opened his eyes and shot a glance at Penny. "What?" Drask assumed she wanted to ask him something about the area they were headed to, but it wasn't her who flicked his ear, but he didn't know that. In the seat behind him was the true culprit, a beast who was nondescriptly holding a newspaper over his face....

"Hmm . . ." Penny looked up from her book. It was actually sort of embarrassing how engrossed she had become in its pages. The writing was substandard and the premise was laughable but it drew her in like everybody else. She normally stuck to non-fiction but she'd heard so much about it good and bad that when she saw it on the shelf at the airport shop she decided it might do for some mindless travel reading. And now here she was: hopelessly wrapped up in the fictional lives of vampires and werewolves. She rolled her eyes at her own silliness. It must be the connection to Phoenix and Washington. Yes, that's it surely. Then she remembered what had drawn her away from the story. "Something wrong?" She asked Drask.

Drask stared at her, "Didn't you just flick my ear? Or was it my imagination?" He could have swore somebeast flicked his ear and Penny seemed like the logical explanation, but she was engrossed with reading that book she picked up. Maybe it wasn't her. And then again, maybe he was going crazy from all those days in the jungle. Drask could have swore he heard someone laughing, and trying badly to cover it up, from somewhere behind him.....

"It wasn't me," Penny replied sounding more defensive than she meant to because of her embarrassment at being so engrossed in the book that she didn't know what else was going on. Then she too heard somebeast suppressing laughter behind them. She raised her eyebrows and gestured towards the row behind them. "Maybe . . ." she mouthed. "Do you know them?"

Drask glanced back to the row behind them and saw two beasts holding newspapers over their faces. That was rather odd to see, but he couldn't make out who it was. He turned back to Penny and shrugged his shoulders, "Well, If I didn't know any better, I would assume it was one of those two who flicked my ear, but it might be lack of sleep or something." Another muffled laugh came from behind them, and Drask frowned, that laugh seemed vaguely familiar, but he couldn't quite remember where he had heard it before. That was until the beast tapped his shoulder, and spoke, "Drask Darkfang! What are you doing on this plane?!" Drask turned in his seat quickly and was dumbstruck by what he saw; the two beasts were Uncle Travis Wolfe and Dave Samoni! He stared at the two of them for a moment for a moment before finally speaking. "What are you guys doing on this plane?" Dave Salmoni was a burly looking otter who was with Drask on several his expeditions, and was recognized by the scientific community for his studies in Alaska, Penny probably would have heard some of him. While Travis looked like the older version of Drask, the same pure white fur, but without blue eyes. Drask smiled, and made introductions, "Penny, this is my Uncle Wolfe, and this is my old friend, Dave Salmoni."

Penny smiled and nodded at the older ferret, "Mr. Wolfe." And then she focused her attention on the otter. "Mr. Salmoni, it's an honor. I read your book." As she said the last word she held up the book in her paw and then quickly realized that this was not the book that he had written nor was it one that she would like to have the scientist catch her reading. She quickly put the offensive reading material behind her back as she blushed bright red under her fur.

Drask could have rolled his eyes at what they caught Penny reading, he thought all that Twilight was just nonsense, but it was clear a large portion of the population of young female beasts loved it. He turned back around in his seat, but continued his conversation with his uncle, "So, what's got you headed up North?"
Travis leaned forward in his chair, so that his words wouldn't be overheard by the other beasts on the plane, just Penny, Drask, and Dave, who had leaned forward also. "I got a call from old Jeff Meldrum, it had to do with some kind of killings up there. That stuff isn't really one of my skills, but he made a good argument and persuaded me to come. Turns out he had the same talk with Dave, and we're flying up there together."
Drask nodded as he listened to his uncle explaining everything to him in a low tone. Travis could have elaborated on the subject, he chose not to do so, for fear all the others in the plane would catch some of what he was saying. Drask in turn explained a bit of why he was flying to Alaska, "Same thing happened to me. I got a message from Jeff last night, about coming up there to help him out. And," He started to explain why this ferretmaid came with him, but he couldn't say that she refused to stay behind. "Penny is a scientist too, she just graduated from college. She, uh, persuaded me to let her come and help too."

"B-biology, Sir." Penny still stared at Dave Samoni, starstruck. "That was my major. I used your book in the footnotes of my thesis." She smiled and looked down after a moment of realizing she was staring. She didn't what to embarrass Drask or make him sorry for agreeing to bring her along. She looked over at Drask. "I just figured being in the field was better than anything I could learn in a book."

The otter smiled back at Penny, "It's good to know somebeast read my book besides these two. Well, I'm not even sure if any of them finished the whole book." Dave brought up the old joke between the two ferrets about his book, because it took Drask a year just to finish it, and Travis took even longer, both beasts being too busy to sit down and take time to read through Salmoni's book. The otter brought up what Penny mentioned about coming along, agreeing with her. "Yeah, reading books is never as educational as being out in the field. You'll learn a lot, and learn it fast out there, if you keep up with everything. But it shouldn't be too hard for you." Dave spoke in a similar accent to Drask, the flat, well pronounced voice of a beast from the Pacific Northwest, because he was born in the state of Oregon, a place quite similar to Washington.
Travis was interested more in why this Penny came with his nephew to go to Alaska in the first place. Maybe Drask was finally lightening up a little, and looking at something other than his work, which might explain how Penny ended up coming with him. The older ferret tapped Dave on the shoulder, smiling as he did so, "Oh, stop telling us that, Dave. At least we managed to finish that book of yours."
Drask remained silent through the joking between his uncle and the otter, though the joke did include him, he didn't feel like laughing along with them. The ferret might have acted cool to his friends, but he tried to lighten up a bit, for the sake of Penny, he didn't want to remain silent when Dave and Travis started interviewing her about her experience. "But I put your book to good use, Dave. Before I started reading it, I used as a paperweight." He smiled slightly as he joked with the beasts sitting behind him, finally showing a bit of humor. The younger ferret agreed with Penny and Dave, that the ferretmaid would learn quite a bit out in the field, much more than she could learn with her nose stuck in a book.

Penny enjoyed the time spent with one of her heroes once she got over her initial shyness. She peppered Dave with questions about chapters 4 and 9 much to the boredom of the others and then to bring them into the conversation began asking Drask's uncle about what he was like in his younger seasons. She was almost sorry to see the flight come to an end.
The seatbelt sign went off and the ferretmaid stood. She smirked at Drask as she asked Travis once again, "And he really totaled your car when he was just 14?" She reached up and opened the over head compartment trying to retrieve her carry-on bag but it was jammed in tight next to somebeast else's.

Travis enjoyed the few hours they spent on the flight, speaking about what his nephew was like when he was younger. The older ferret wasn't sure how Drask would feel about having all these old stories told, but just like the normal, Drask stayed quiet through most of the accounts, except to correct some of the things his uncle told. Travis smiled at Penny as he stood, "Yes. And to think I helped buy that Mustang for him when he got out of college, surprising he hasn't crashed that thing yet. But I'll always miss my trusty old Jeep that Drask drove straight into the forest, and right into a tree." That day seemed so long ago to Travis, back when he tried his hardest to play the role of father in Drask's life. It was a constant challenge to keep him out of trouble, but the older ferret managed it, frequently taking Drask with him on his expeditions in the Pacific Northwest and filling his nephew's mind with the wonders of the outdoors. That time spent together helped the young ferret tremendously, it changed his life, putting him on the course that he now traveled.
Drask wasn't as enthusiastic about describing all that he did back when he was younger, even to Penny. He finally said something as he unbuckled and stood, "That wasn't totally my fault, you should have never left Vern and I alone out there. It was a disaster waiting to happen." Drask added this as he rolled his eyes at the story telling of his uncle, because Travis had left out a couple of things in his tales. The ferret made his way to the overhead compartment, standing beside Penny as he reached up to pull down his backpack, then he assisted the ferretmaid to get her bag down, which was wedged next to Dave's large pack. Well, they were finally here. Penny was actually in Alaska with him, after just that one call that went in a different direction than he meant it to. There was no going back now. Drask shouldered his back pack after that, and looked back over to Dave and Travis, "Alaska better have a Subway somewhere."

Penny didn't realize that she had been holding her breath until Dave asked her if she needed help with her bag. "No thank you. I've got it." She had also been staring at Drask. He had caught her eye for only a moment as he lifted her bag down from the overhead compartment. But as he hurried away talking about getting something to eat she was sure that he hadn't felt the same moment of connection that she had. It was silly really. They were friends, that's all. And now she was . . . Oh Blast it! What was she doing here?
The ferretmaid hurried forward down the center aisle of the plane. The air felt chilly and it woke her up a little more from her thoughts. It also reminded her that she was going to have to do some shopping if she was going to be here for a while. "I wonder if they have a duty-free shop here or if I'll have to find a Wal-Mart or something." She mused aloud.

Travis in turn gathered his bag from the overhead compartment, following his nephew and Penny toward the plane's door, but once he was sure the two other ferrets were out of hearing range, he turned back to Dave, whispering to the otter. "Interesting pare, eh?"
Dave chuckled lightly, "We'll see. From what I saw Drask is still too shy around everybeast, at least that Penny read my book. Huh, she's got my respect from just that." The otter started behind the other three, after grabbing his large back pack. Dave didn't say anything else about that subject, neither did Travis, for now, the two were just glad their friend let this ferretmaid come along, it was refreshing to have some other beast along with the three of them.
Drask made his way to the door easily, for there wasn't that many passengers on board the flight to Alaska. Once they walked through that door, they went through the tunnel that was connected right after the plane's landing, and they were quickly in the airport. After a bit of looking around the area right outside the door, Drask finally spotted a sign for the baggage claim. If Jeff Meldrum arranged for anybeast to meet them, it would more than likely be there, maybe Jeff would have managed to come here in person, for he sound quite urgent over the phone.
Drask didn't have time to barely take a few steps in the direction the sign indicated before a familiar voice called out to him.....
"Drask Darkfang! What the heck are you doing up here?"
Drask immediately recognized the voice, which had a slight, but noticeable New Yorker accent to it, it was an old colleague of his; Jeska Kiper. A ferret that specialized in just a bit of everything, but her primary field of expertise was biology, Jeska attended the same college as Drask a few years back, the two even going on one expedition together right after graduation. She had apparently just arrived, since all she had was her carry on bag. Jeska quickly made her way through the crowd, which was a bit smallish, to Drask and his companions. Once there, the ferretmaid gave Drask a hug, with a broad smile on her face, light blue eyes twinkling. "I haven't seen you since we went to Brazil! How's everything going? What brings you up here?" Jeska quickly spouted out questions to her old friend right after releasing him from her embrace and she guessed the reason he was here for herself. "Hold on, Jeff Meldrum, right? Otherwise, I couldn't see you traveling here with Dave and Travis, unless Jeff contacted all of us. I seriously doubt Travis would haul himself out of the lab unless Meldrum offered money." She joked lightly with Drask's uncle, for she knew him also.
As if finally noticing Penny, the other ferretmaid smiled at her, "Don't tell me Drask managed to drag you along on this ridiculous trip. After going with him once, I would never do it again. Unless, there was an amount of money involved."
Drask smiled slightly at Jeska, "Thank you. I've seen you for two seconds and you're already trying to insult me. Wow, I think I got the short end of the stick going with you to Brazil." The presence of the other ferretmaid made him loosen up slightly, otherwise, Jeska would walk over him with her playful taunting. For a moment, he wondered what Penny's response to Jeska would be. He didn't expect Penny to be jealous about Drask having another friend, one that was also a ferretmaid, one was was good looking as well. Of course, he never expected Penny to read Twilight either, so he wouldn't be completely shocked if she felt that way, but he highly doubted that Penny would act that way.
