"What?" She spun around. She hadn't noticed the otter before and he had startled her. "Oh it's you, Skip. And no, why on earth would I be looking for somebeast named Silas, who I hardly know at all." She added the last bit rather forcefully as if that settled the matter. "I was just having a walk on this beautiful morning and seeing if there were any more marlfoxes about." The truth was the sky was rather gray and threating to rain. "Thought maybe I could help, seeing as I'm the only creature who's ever actually seen one."

Skipper Ronan smiled at the squirrelmaid. He knew she was lying when she said she wasn't looking for Silas and that she was watching for more Marlfoxes, but he decided to let the matter drop. Well I appreciate the help. Thank you.

"Well yes. You're welcome." Tamar looked back out at the path. "Sometimes getting a female mind on the job is just the thing." The day was a bit misty and it made visibility low. She thought she may have seen a dark shape in the distance and squinted, leaning out over the parapet in an attempt to make it out.

However, the dark blotch was just Tamar's imagination, possibly... Or was it?
Some time after, though, the grey clouds started to drop not rain, but snow. The first snow of the season. The first few snowflakes reached the walltops, as they were higher up, the tiny flakes settling upon every exposed surface. The whole thing seemed like a dream, as if it was an illusion, silently falling upon the earth. Then, the peaceful illusion was shattered.
Whumpf!
Something heavily impacted the main gate, in fact somebeast. He knew he couldn't climb the walls. He was too tired. Leaning against the door, he rested, his breath turning into steam as he exhaled.

Skipper smiled fondly at the squirrelmaid before jumping in surprise as he heard something collide with the gate. He stared down through the mist and perked his ears as he tried to determine whether it was a friend or foebeast. Finally he called out in a strong, authoritative voice, Who goes there? Be ye friend or foe?

Tamar looked up at the sky as the snow started to fall. She liked winter. The warm fires in Caver Hole and all kinds of wonderful smells coming out of the kitchens.
Whumpf!
The sound brought her out of her reverie and she leaned out over the battlement and tried to see who the beast was who had crashed into it. "Who is it, Skip?" she asked excitedly.

The beast, not visible from the walltops, spoke out in a familiar voice nonetheless. "Fr... Friend!" he didn't realize it would get this cold this quick, and only had worn a shortsleeve tunic when exiting the Abbey. Well, he was back. He recognized the Skipper's voice, and of course the other's. His bushy tail in a mess, he tried to stand up off of the door, bearing fresh cuts, clawmarks across his cheek, a bruise or two... From any outward appearance, one could safely assume that he was in a fight earlier.

"Skipper, it's Silas! Open the gate! Let him in!" She ran down the steps two and three at a time and tried to lift the bar on her own. It was far to heavy of course. She was quite cold herself but she couldn't think about that at a time like this.

Skipper rushed down the steps also and beat her to the gate bar. He put his paws underneath and grasped it firmly. Bracing himself, he pushed it out of the slats and pulled the gates open, helping the other squirrel inside. You alright there, matey? You look in bad shape. Here, Tamar, me pretty, take him a moment. After handing the squirrel to the squirrelmaid, he pushed the gates shut again, hoisted the bar up, and placed it back in the lock slats.

Silas coughed, stumbling inside with the aid of the Skipper, seeing the beasts who he had heard just a moment earlier. Limping along, it became apparent that he was injured in the footpaw as well. "A fox..." He attempted to explain his injuries. "Came and attacked." Being supported by the squirrelmaid, and once again in the walls of the Abbey, he felt safe. But he also felt the sharp pang of guilt. The others were still back there. He was sent to deliver a message to be on the lookout for a horde they themselves had run into. He had also hoped to enter the Abbey in a better condition, if only for appearance's sake in front of Tamar.
During his little escapade, he realized he liked her, for some reason, though he wouldn't openly admit it... yet. And she herself was acting awfully concerned right now towards him for a critical miss priss on the walltops two days earlier, telling him off as he left. When otherbeasts looked at her, they just saw the resident 'Femme' of Redwall Abbey. But something, some gut feeling told Silas differently about her. Maybe...

"Great seasons!" she exclaimed trying her best to hold the him upright. "A fox? Was it a marlfox? There was on here while you were gone." She didn't know what else to say so her whole story came tumbling out. "He held a dagger to my throat and made me unlock the gate and locked me in the gate house but I got out using your pen knife. . ." she trailed off after this last admission, that it had been his knife that she had used. She swallowed and looked into his eyes. "But you're hurt. You need . . . infirmary."

Skipper nodded, but looked worried. Tamar's right, mate. You need to get to the infirmary, but I also need to know where you saw this fox and whether or not it was a Marlfox. Come on. You can tell me on the way up. I'll take him, Tamar. He picked the squirrel up in his strong arms and carried him inside and up to the infirmary.

"...Now hold on- Whoa!" Silas was lifted up and carried to the infirmary, glancing back at Tamar a second before protesting aloud to the Skipper. "I can walk, mate! Put me down." He was also silently and inwardly grimacing. It was indeed a Marlfox he had met on the way to the Abbey, most likely the same one that threatened Tamar. Twice, he had not been able to protect the abbey dwellers. Sighing, he explained everything that happened on the way to the Abbey after a short realization of defeat.

Tamar rushed after Skipper and nearly ran into the back of him when Silas told him to stop. She was determined to stay as close as she could to Silas now that he was back. Especially now that he had been injured. And she didn't think he was weak at all for having suffered these wounds. She listened wide eyed as he told his story, paws pressed to her mouth with horror for most of it.

((Well, it WAS in 'A Little Walk' and 'A thief and a Fox', but they both died out. What's happening is that Shade is onhis own, raiding the Abbey, but The fox captain guy wants to take the whole Abbey instead of just the loot. And A buncha folks are off fighting his horde, and Silas came back to Warn the abbey, seeing that he was the fastest of the group.))
"...And then I see this fox comin' at me with a bag over his shoulder. Well, he sees me coing, and drops the bag. Soon as I got there, poof! Gone. But when I turned around, he was standing there with a dirk. He rushed forward, but I hit his shin to trip him up..." He goes on, telling of the fight between him and the marlfox, apparently arriving at a stalemate, the fox with a black eye and other such cuts and bruises, whereas Silas himself had obtained the injuries he currently has. He sighed, finishing as they went to the main doors of the abbey building. "And then I came here, fast as I could..."
