The mink as surprised when the ferret suddenly greeted her in her native land's language, but her surprised expression changed to slight happiness and excitement at the fact she could communicate with someone! Though she didn't know she was supposed to shake the ferret's paw, she did know she was supposed to grab it. Grabbing it in her webbed paw. She replied "Hi... Your the first beast that has ever understood me since i was taken from home...."

Jayne's gaze fell quickly and subserviently to the floor, "I-I-I'm s-sorry, Your Highness. I-I didn't . . . I mean yes. I do speak . . . a little of the mink tongue." Her instinct was to back away into the shadows. She knew the rules. Slaves were not meant to be seen or heard, especially by royalty. She felt something holding her to the spot, but it was not the cold metal of a manacle. It was the small, warm, webbed paw of the mink child. The child's hopeful smile bolstered her courage and reminded her that she was free. She whispered in mink, "I too was taken from my home when I was smaller than you."
((and the whole story of Jayne and the mink slave she knew popped into my head this morning so somebeast is going to have to ask her about it sometime. It's wonderfully tragic. oh and cole can we do like italics or bold or something when they're speaking in mink? I have a feeling Jayne might jump back and forth if she's trying to answer everybody's questions at the same time.))

The warlord was almost as excited as his daughter about discovering a beast that could speak the language of the Minks from the New World. Vrelt didn't speak for several moments after Jayne whispered to Tallula, he silently searched for the right words to say, now that this ferret could translate what he said to his daughter. "Translate what I say to her." As he gave those orders to Jayne, Englehorn stepped in, in two ways; first the captain moved to stand next to Vrelt, and he stepped into the conversation. "Darkfang, you can't give orders to one of my crew. The same as I wouldn't give orders to one of your soldiers."
Vrelt turned his icy eyes to Draygo, "If you haven't forgotten, this is my island, Englehorn. I give orders to anybeast on it." The warlord spoke with an authority that he had gained in only the last several years, an authority that only one in complete control would have.
Englehorn wasn't about to back down, even if Vrelt had the upper paw in this showdown, he pointed a finger at him, "As long as I employ her, she takes no orders from you, Darkfang." By this time Mr. Hayes had stepped in as well, standing at his captain's shoulder. The big stoat was prepared to back up Draygo against Vrelt if the rivalry between them didn't cool off.

When the big stoat stood besides Draygo, Conan stood forward next to Vrelt, ready to back him up if things go to hell gates. With paw on the large cutlass he always carried with him, he kept his eyes mostly locked on the stoat's. "I can' kill him. I'll cut 'im up into shark chum." He thought. He had the bigger blade, he had the bigger muscle and most of all. He had the hardships of the Land of Ice and Snow to back him up.
Tallula was looking at the scene of rivalry, that cute face suddenly turning into a fearsome smile at the sight, the icy blue eyes spark with Darkfang excitement at the scene that was heating up. She spoke with a exited tone. "Looks likes it might be a execution after all. The strange looking fox and Chief are going to kill them like real tribe warriors. You watch!"

Jayne watched the change in the child's face and then looked up and saw the nearly identical expression on the face of the warlord. It was the first time she had taken a good look at him. Her eyes traveled back and forth between he and the captain. She rattled off in a rapid stream of mink, "They're fighting over me." her tone holding the slightest bit of vanity. "My chief says I obey only him. Your Daddychief says he is chief over whole big island and I obey him." She was frightened but pleased that Draygo had stood up for her. Then there was this other ferret, the one with the icy blue eyes like the child. . . "It's okay, Captain. I don't mind translating. The girl has no other beast who can speak to her."

Draygo kept his eyes on the warlord as he responded to Jayne. "Fine." He remained standing in front of Vrelt, still tensed for a fight; this rivalry was about more than simple authority. The true basis of this rivalry was started since the day the two ferrets started working on the same side, having Jayne here quickly escalated it.
Vrelt boldly looked away from Englehorn, ignoring the threat now that Conan stepped in, he had full confidence in that beast. The warlord spoke to Jayne again, his voice back under control. "Now that your Captain's orders are obsolete, listen to me." He stopped for a brief moment before continuing with his gaze on Tallula. "What is your name? Translate my question to her." Vrelt was bursting with excitement now that he could communicate with his long lost daughter, this ferretmaid may have been bad luck at sea, but she was close to becoming a great help to the Ruler of Riftgard.

"I'll try," Jayne nodded to the Warlord. She was sure she could do the translation but the blue-eyed ferret made her nervous. She glanced at Draygo once more to make sure this was really okay with him and then leaned down to the child. "Your daddychief wants to know your name"
(does her name have some special meaning in mink that I can translate for him?)

Tallula came here sad, than happy and now just exited. Though she didn't let it all go to her head, she knew due to the fight or whatever is going on between daddy and the other beast would cause her to more than likely not have this lady ferret around to us as a translator.....
"Tallula. My name is Tallula."

((i guess i'll go ahead and translate before Vrelt posts *sigh* ))
Jayne felt the small webbed paw grip her own a bit tighter as she answered the question. She could tell that the child was excited to finally have an interpreter and maybe a little worried about loosing Jayne if things when badly between the two 'chiefs'. The thought made Jayne smile. She was glad that she had stood up to Draygo.
"It's a beautiful name." Jayne squeezed the paw back encouragingly before standing and addressing Vrelt.
"Her name is Tallula," She looked at him bravely in the eyes for just a moment and then the power of those icy blue orbs overwhelmed her again and she dropped her gaze adding, "Your Majesty."

Vrelt allowed the name of his daughter to sink in as he stood there; Tallula. The warlord didn't stay silent for long, and quickly made gave Jayne more orders, "Tell her my name is Vrelt Darkfang." Once this exchange of names was over, he would be forced to listen to all the reports of Draygo, which he did not want to do at the time. Vrelt allowed a slight smile to light his features, for two reasons; first he was delighted at the power he had over the ferretmaid at this point, second he was finally getting to know his long lost daughter.
Draygo was slightly disappointed that the near conflict was over that quickly, he was ready to end his rivalry with Darkfang. The captain took several deep breaths to calm himself as he waited for this family reunion to end, and it didn't help his mood any that Jayne listened to Vrelt's orders. That Darkfang had gone too far this time, even if he was simply trying to communicate with his daughter.

Jayne nodded and but she did not look Vrelt in the eye again. Of course she knew his name but she didn't bring this up she merely bent down to the child's level again and said as calmly as she could, "Your father's name is Vrelt Darkfang. That means that you are also a Darkfang." She tried to smile at the end of this as if to congratulate the little mink on her new title.
((there cole does that make it easier for you to post? oh and Vrelt does this mean that Vrelt is going to get himself an invite to the party in the Madness thread and totally shock Jayne?))

Tallula thought her daddy's name over in her head. Vrelt.... what a nice name. She didn't understand the other though. Darkfrang? Didn't sound anything like a last name... oh! it was a title really! That would make sense. Daddy being chief and all.
" A Darkfang? I like that title." She said with a slight giggle.

Jayne smiled at the girl again and without looking up informed the warlord, "She's happy to be a Darkfang." Then sensing that she had done her job for the moment she squeezed Tallula's paw once more and went to stand next to Draygo.

((You think he should, Cara? He wasn't in OTC, so I'm not sure. I guess he could crash that party though.))
The warlord decided that this talk with Tallula was over now, even though he didn't want it to end, he knew that his duty took priority. Once Jayne stepped back over to Draygo's side, Vrelt turned away from his daughter, now he was going to get those reports from Englehorn. The ferret didn't return to his throne to hear what Draygo had to say, instead he remained near his daughter for the news. "Well Englehorn? I paid your ridiculous fee, now tell me everything that's happened around the islands."
Draygo did not like getting pushed around, especially by Vrelt Darkfang, but because refusing to fulfill his part of the bargain would result in his death. The captain took a few more seconds to calm himself before launching into a long winded report about everything he learned from his voyages, including the change of rulers at Sampetra. "It seemed that the beasts at Sampetra accepted that Moll Rawnwave well. Even your brother followed her." Vrelt remained silent, and nodded for Draygo to continue. Englehorn kept on for another few minutes until he concluded with the words, "Now you have serious competition against Herrick for control of all the pirates. That's all I have for you, Darkfang."
Vrelt pondered over all the happenings that the captain of the Venture told about, of particular interest to him was the change of leadership for Sampetra. That opened up a whole new opportunity to expand his empire's influence, by allying with Queen Moll. Even if a ferret that was an even bigger rival than Draygo was one of the leaders at Sampetra, Vrelt thought he could persuade Moll to join with him. Drask was a large set back for that ambition, but he was also confident he could overstep that problem as well.
The warlord addressed Draygo again, this time he wasn't challenging the captain, but he spoke in a calm, even voice. "Thank you for your reports, captain. This is indeed good news for Riftgard, except for Herrick of course. Now I would like to make another deal with you. I want the services of this ferretmaid as translator for a few weeks, just until Tallula is taught to speak our language. I'm willing to pay a generous sum of money to take her off your paws. Consider it a blessing, Captain. You know that having a female on a ship is bad luck after all."
Draygo grew immediately furious with the warlord, what right did he have to take Jayne "off his paws?" The captain fought not to draw his sword and attempt to dismember the ferret standing in front of him. Draygo grimaced in anger as his looked at Jayne, just to see what she thought of this proposal. Of course there was nothing he could do to stop Vrelt from taking Jayne away, he was no match for all the soldiers and pirates the warlord had on this island.

Jayne's green eyes were as wide and frightened as they had been the night she had met Draygo on his ship trying to stowaway so she could escape her bonds of slavery. And now here she was again, a slave, with no choice but to serve the highest bidder. She gave Draygo a defeated look and then looked down at her footpaws again. She was right, the chains on the dock had been a bad omen. They had been waiting for her.
